Dan
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Daniel, happy birthday to you!" I open my eyes. My mom walks into my room, carrying two cupcakes. One with black icing and a little candle on it, the other one has pink icing. I sit up with a smile.
"Happy birthday Daniel." my mom says, as she gives me a kiss. I wrap my arms around her and give her a hug. I put my face into her shoulder, breathing in her familiar scent.
"Thank you, mom. Thank you so much." I whisper. I pull back and give her a smile as she hands me the black cupcake. "Make a wish!" she says. I close my eyes.
I wish for my mom to be happy, even when I am not.
I blow out the candle, unwrap the cupcake and take a bite.
"It's chocolate flavoured, my favourite!" I exclaim. "You really didn't have to do this, mom." She smiles at me.
"Wait until you see your next present."
"You got me a present? Really?"
"Of course I did! Why wouldn't I? You're my only child. You deserve this. Let me get it from my room." she stands up and walks away.

I don't know what is happening exactly right now, Moon, but that was such a sweet wish.

Sun! When is your exam?

In five minutes. I'm shitting my pants, but I've got this very happy feeling inside my stomach. I'm glad you're happy, Moon.

I wish you the best of luck,
you can do it, okay?

My mom walks into the room again, holding a small box. She sits onto my bed and hands me it. It's quite heavy.
The box is wrapped in black wrapping paper. It has a white bow on it.
I unwrap the present and slowly open it.
When I see what it is, my heart starts beating faster. I tear up.
"Mom, did you actually.. how.. why.. I.."
My mom just smiles at me. I start crying.

She got me a phone. A brand new, black iPhone.

"How did you.. I don't deserve this!" I cry. She wraps her arms around me and rocks me back and forth, like a child.
"Daniel. You've been so strong for the past 10 years. You're doing so well at school. I see you're not always happy. I've been saving for this for years. I just want you to be happy, I hope it can bring some joy into your life."
More tears stream down my face.
How come everything is suddenly so great? In about 12 hours my whole world changed. I don't deserve this. I am worthless. But I can't not take the phone, my mom saved money for it for years. She wants me to have this.
"Thank you so much, mom. I love you. A lot." I whisper.
"I love you more."
