I woke up early the next morning to get to work. My shift started at 7:45 but I like going to Dunkin Donuts around 7 so I can read from my Bible Austin got me and eat some breakfast.
I asked Austin a couple weeks ago if it was OK for the family's money if I spent my money on breakfast every work day and since he loves me, he agreed.
I drive a red 2009 car. It isn't what I always wanted but at least it's something. When I get the money I want to buy a red convertible so I can feel my long curly blonde hair sway in the wind.
I walked into Dunkin Donuts and headed straight for the counter.
"2 triple chocolate donuts and a hot chocolate, please!" I smiled as I recited my usual.
I recognized the guy at the counter and he recognized me. He is here every time I'm here and he is super sweet and nice. I think he's just nice to me because I always let him keep the change.
I know our family may not be in a stable condition for me to do that but I like brightening people's days and I see no problem in that. Who knows, maybe this guy working at Dunkin Donuts is less poor than me.
"I should have known. That will be $5.89." He smiled and laughed.
I gave him six dollars after he got out my two chocolate donuts and made my hot chocolate.
"Your pretty much the only customer we get around here. The other customers are just visitors. Not sure why anybody would want to visit our small town." The guy, which I read his name plate a couple weeks ago and saw it read Zach, said as he handed me my receipt.
"Maybe there is just something charming about this small, old town in Missouri." I smiled.
"If there is, I can't see it. Hey, we should get together sometime, Kaitlyn." Zach looked hopeful.
"That would be nice! I never get out anyway, other than going to my job at the record store. I mean, life is worth going out and livi-wait how did you know my name?" I asked.
"It comes up every time I swipe your card." He laughed.
"Oh, just wondering." I looked at him suspiciously as a joke.
"Hey, how bout we have some breakfast together? Right now?" He smiled.
"Sure! I mean, there are no customers here." I shrugged as I walked away to find a table for two.
I saw Zach grab the same thing I ordered for himself and walk towards me.
Oh, what Austin would think about this. Me having breakfast with some guy I barely even know.
"Hey. You don't mind do you? I know you read your Bible every time you come here. Maybe you can share some of your favorite Bible verses." Zach smiled as he sat down.
"Of course, I don't mind! Your a Christian too?" I asked.
"Yeah. My family and I are big on Christianity. I don't know what I'd do without God." Zach nodded and looked down.
"My family is kind of forbidding Christianity in our family. That's why I read my Bible every day here. So, they don't know. My brother is hiding his Christianity too. He's the one who got me to accept Jesus into my heart." I half smiled, but very embarrassed.
Zach took my hand.
"Your really brave for doing this. Going against your parents house rules to read God's word. Amazing. I don't know if I would have the guts to do that." He smiled and looked down at his hand holding mine. "Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry." He said as he took his hand away.
"It's fine." I smiled.
"Why don't you come to church with my family one time?" He asked.
"I'm too scared. My parents say if my brother or I are Christians they will kick us out of their house and pretend we were never born." Tears started pouring out of my eyes.
"It's ok. You don't have to. Your already brave enough for being a Christian. You shouldn't sneak out of the house anyway." He said.
I opened my Bible.
"I read this verse yesterday. It was in 1 Peter Chapter 5. 'And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you."' I closed my Bible after I read it.
"That's really powerful. Do you have something in your life that relates to this verse?" Zach asked.
"My father sometimes beats me when I say the word God and my mom locks me in a closet for 2 hours every time I complain about their Christianity policies." I blurted out.
I didn't want to say it. I didn't want to complain about my life to him. I just felt so open to Zach. I couldn't find a reason not to tell him.
"I'm so sorry." He looked down. "I'm sure my parents would love to take you in but I know you don't want to do that."
"My brother and I want to make it our mission to tell them as much about God as we can. They need a chance." I smiled. "I'll be fine. But I promise that if things get out of hand, I'll call you." I smiled.
I left Dunkin Donuts feeling confident that today would be good. Zach really made me feel a lot better. I called Austin before I started driving.
"Hey what's up?" Austin answered.
"So, I just had breakfast with this guy named Zach and I think we need to-" I said before I got cut off by Austin.
"YOU HAD BREAKFAST WITH SOME RANDOM GUY!" Austin yelled into the phone.
"He wasn't random, I told you his name is Zach and we know each other because every day I go in Dunkin Donuts for breakfast he is always there and he asked me if I wanted to have breakfast with him so I said yes." I explained.
"Is he nice? Is he a Christian?" He asked.
"Yes. He inspired me. I think we need to spread the word about God to our parents." I said.
"Your kidding me. Their gonna kill us!" He exclaimed.
"Whatever we have to do to share God's word, especially to our parents. Don't you want our parents to have a good life even after their dead?" I asked.
"Your right. I'm proud of you, Kaitlyn." He said before he hung up.
