When We Were Young(10)
Alicia:
"So you've found someone who might have a grudge against you?" I asked Derrick when he picked up my call.
"Yeah, one of my buddies from highschool. Remember Cole D'Ambrisio?"
I scoffed. "How could I forget the block head? The arrogant son of a bitch would try to get in my pants every time you left the room." I shivered just thinking about it. Cole was the doggiest of the dogs. His family was in high places being very generous donators to NYU and Rutger's University campuses in New Jersey.
"He did?! That little creep!" He exclaimed.
I chuckled. "You're just noticing? I mean the only reason you really kept him around was to keep your old habit."
I could picture him flinching even over the phone. "Yeah I know. He was such an ignorant jerk face."
"Yeah. But why would he hate you? I mean you guys were tight shit until...until you got arrested." My eyes widened as I realized why I never understood why Derrick was let off so easy. "You didn't."
He sighed knowing what I meant. "Yeah. I did."
"You snitched out a D'Ambrisio!?" I cried. I quickly closed my door. "Are you insane?! I'm a lawyer and I wouldn't try and cross that bridge unless Jesus himself was standing there with the secrets of life!" I was rambling and barely making sense but I was nervous. If Cole was behind this then we were royally screwed.
Other than having insanely rich family, his family had old ties to the Mob. Yes I mean organized crime Mob. He could have a hit out on Derrick in a quick second no questions asked.
"I know Lee! But it was that or spend 13 years in jail!"
I gasped. "Just how much weed did they bust you with?!"
"Uhh, maybe a pound I was supposed to drop off."
"YOU DIMED OUT SOMEONE WHO CAN KILL YOU BECAUSE YOU WERE SELLING?!" I yelled angrily.
"Yeah. I know it wasn't smart but I didn't think he'd find me. When he left me I was at Rick bottom druggie with a pregnant little sister. Now I'm at NYU for medical school."
"Are you forgetting that he basically owns that school?" I sighed.
"Look Lee, I'm not letting this punk screw me again. What do we have to do to prove I'm innocent?"
I sighed. "I don't know."
Suddenly a plan popped into my head.
I grinned mischievously. "I lied."
----------
"Good to see you sis." Derrick engulfed me in a hug.
I felt so safe in my brothers arms. I had really missed him. He looked like he did four years ago. Exactly like me but with muscles and a sharper jaw-line.
"I missed you too." I mumbled into his chest.
We met in central park. Derrick was out on bail and wasn't allowed to leave the state.
We sat on a bench when he turned and looked at me. He had tired eyes that were now a dull blue, not the bold electric color I had left him with.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" he whispered taking my hand. I felt the callouses and burns he had on his hand. The burns were from all the shaky times he lit up a joint with a lighter.
"Yes. I know this will work." I was confident. My plan was to lure Cole in for a kill. I knew exactly where to find the cocky son of a bitch too. "All I have to do is lure him in and lie a little."
"Isn't that what being a lawyer is all about?" Derrick teased.
I chuckled softly. "No, it's about winning at all cost. Every time we lose we put our lives in a little more danger. Especially murder cases, or cases like yours where the people suspected are at a dangerously high place. Knocking them off their throne can upset their kingdom."
Derrick nodded warily, obviously not liking me luring him in. "Be careful Alicia. I couldn't bear to lose you again. And I doubt that AJ & Alec could bear it either."
I was shocked that he mentioned either of the men(boys) in my life.
"Yeah, yeah Abuela brings up AJ every time she visits. She even showed us a picture. He's a heartbreaker." He grinned. "Runs in the family." he joked flexing his muscles.
I laughed and just nodded. We were some pretty good-looking people.
I sobered up a little and put on a game face as the evening wind blew blowing up my dress just a tad bit above my knees. The little black number clung to me like a second skin under my blazer. The heals I had on made my legs look miles long and my hair was in loose, soft curls.
"Good luck sis." Derrick hugged me tight. "Be safe. Don't get too deep."
I hugged him back. "No worries, if I have anything to say about it that creep isn't laying a finger on me."
-------
I walked into D'Ambrisio's my heals clacking furiously against the marble tile. The restaurant was true in it's Italian ways. The joint was owned by Cole's undeserving ass.
My focus was to quickly find him and start the plan. He always hung out here in the early evening before going out to a club. I scanned the place before spotting him at the bar.
I smirked. Perfect.
I walked with the physique of a model and the grace of a dancer. I turned a few heads and even stopped the slow traffic a bit.
I sat at the bar right next to him pretending as if his presence was non-existent. He still looked the same. Same dirty blonde waves, same grey eyes, and same pretty face. I will admit he was eye candy but he was pure scum in human form.
"Vodka on the rocks." I told the bartender. It was the strongest thing I could think of.
"No problem." he winked and went on making my drink.
I gave him a sly smile. A few minutes later he was back with my drink. I pulled out my wallet about to pay but a voice stopped me.
"Put it on my tab Phillip." the voice deep; full of authority.
"Sure thing boss." Phillip responded going back to work.
Cold turned to look at me and I'll admit had I not known of himI would probably be flirting my ass off right now, but I was on a mission-no. A crusade to save my brothers pending life.
Cole smirked at me as if he had a little secret. "So Alicia, are you just going to sit there trying to get me to pay for drinks or are you going to tell me why you're here."
I felt my jaw drop and felt myself stiffen.
I was gobsmacked. He knew who I was.
My plan has officially gone to shit.
I'm so screwed.
