Madison's POV
Double dating was not my thing. I had never been on a double date, nor did I ever imagine on going one. I definitely never expected Ross to suggest going on one, which made me think about his true intentions. I didn't believe his claim on wanting to get to know Shawn at all, but what else could it be?
I hadn't officially met Carter, only getting a quick look at her when Ross met her at the mall, so I wondered how she was in person. He seemed completely infatuated with her, so that was a good sign.
At work, all I could think about the double date later tonight. My focus should've been on the kids, but it wasn't. I half-mindedly chased them around the room during playtime, fed them lunch with a cluttered mind, and zoned out when it was naptime. I had never been more grateful that today was a half-day.
I managed to take a quick nap before getting ready. My outfit had already been chosen from the morning, so with a few extra minutes to spare, I took a much-needed shower. I allowed the hot water to soothe my tired muscles, letting it run over my face and relax me. A good twenty-minutes must've passed before I reluctantly stepped out, wrapping a fluffy towel around my body and hair.
I would much rather stay in the shower and become a prune then go on this date.
I blow-dried and straightened my hair, applying my makeup afterwards. I dropped the towel to the floor, replacing it with my white cutout leather dress before slipping on my silver pump heels. I sprayed my body with the best fragrance and quickly rushed to the door when I heard a knock.
My heart was hammering beneath my ribcage.
I exhaled a long breath as I gripped the doorknob and twisted it open, an automatic and relaxed smile adorning my face. Shawn smiled back, his eyes slightly shining. I took notice of his hand behind his back. "Hey, Shawn." I bit my lip as I examined his outfit; black trousers, a white-buttoned shirt and a leather jacket.
One word: Yum.
"Hi, gorgeous. These are for you." I felt myself blush as he handed me the bouquet of red roses, and I immediately felt myself melting at their sweet scent.
"These are beautiful. Thank you so much!" I immediately hugged him and pulled back, linking my arm in Shawn's as we made our way towards his car. The drive was silent; the only sound being the music that he had turned up on the radio. He flashed me a quick smile before focusing back on the road.
When we arrived at the restaurant, Ross and Carter were immediately noticed. His arms were around her waist as she leaned into him. Both had smiles on their faces, and they looked genuinely happy.
Let's get this night over with.
~*~
I kept my hands in my lap as I sat next to Ross. We decided to sit next to each other so that we could face our dates that were laughing, seeming to be in their own conversation. This was the most awkward thing ever. I just hoped Carter wouldn't turn out to be like Ellie. Ross was my best friend and I would do anything to make him happy.
I picked at my food as Ross placed his hand on my knee, making me look up at him to give him a questioning look. He mouthed something, which I didn't understand and went back to eating. Ross interrupted Shawn and Carter's conversation, "Hey Shawn. How'd you and Madison meet?" Shawn looked up at Ross then at me, causing me to shrug as he immediately grabbed my hand in his, ignoring Carter's requests to carry on the conversation.
"Starbucks." I felt myself blush, and to my surprise he stood up, still holding my hand and scooted closer to me onto the leather couches. My head found a spot on his chest as he wrapped his arm around me.
"Madison? Can we talk?" I lifted my head up to look at Shawn as his whisper echoed in my ear.
"Of course. Let's go outside-" I straightened myself up but he kept his arms around me, his fingers trailing small shapes down my arms to my hands.
He cut me off, "No uh. I wanna say it here."
"Go ahead." I gave him an encouraging smile as I sat up, his arm only now draped around my shoulder.
He cleared his throat. "Well, I really like you and you're the most amazing girl I've ever met, and I was wondering if you'd like to uh, be my girlfriend?"
I thought for a moment, exchanging glances with Ross then turning back to Shawn and nodding, "I'd love to." I wasn't going to let Ross dating someone get me down.
"I understand if you don't- wait what?" His eyes lit up with surprise.
"I'd love to be your girlfriend." I giggled at the blush forming on his cheeks as he pressed his lips onto mine, kissing me passionately. Pulling away after a few moments, I pecked his cheek before finishing eating my food, Shawn didn't release my hand the entire time. I could feel Ross watching me and I looked up at him, arching an eyebrow as he slowly shook his head, turning his attention to Carter.
"Rossy, don't you want to be like Shawn and Maddie?" Carter made her way onto my best friend's lap as he wrapped his arms around her waist.
"Carter. Don't compare us to Shawn and Madison." He answered sharply.
"I wasn't trying to-" she explained as Ross stood up, paying the bill and abruptly leaving the restaurant. I kissed Shawn's cheek and grabbed my clutch before getting up to follow Ross. What had gotten into him?
I found him sat in his car and I knocked on the window, making him roll it down as he looked up at me, his large hazel eyes staring up at me with a questioning look. "Can we talk?"
"Sure." He heaved a sigh and unlocked the car door, opening it so I could get in to sit next to him. "What's up?"
"Nothing."
"Ross, you were the one that suggested this double date and now you just stormed out." I reminded him.
We sat in a silence until he spoke up, "I know, but I don't want that Shawn guy dating you."
I scoffed, "Funnily enough, you don't have a say in who I'm dating."
"You helped me date Carter."
"I didn't force you to ask her out, did I? I was only trying to help you find someone so that you wouldn't get buried in your work, Ross. Stop being jealous."
I got out of the car, crossing my arms over my chest as I leaned against the car. I didn't even realize that Ross had gotten out of the car and stood in front of me, "Why would I be jealous, Maddie? I have Carter. But didn't you see how whatever his name is suddenly stopped talking to her and ignored her? Don't you find that suspicious? It was like he was trying to show off in front of her that he was going to ask you out? You two haven't even been on a second date and he already wants you to be his girlfriend."
"Well, sorry for not having such a perfect dating life as you do." I rolled my eyes as he stepped closer to me, quickly taking his jacket off and putting it over my shoulders. "Mads, it's not about me or my dating life. I just don't want you to get hurt."
"Stop being paranoid. Have you even considered that maybe Shawn actually does like me?"
"He's using you-"
"Shut up!" I handed him his jacket and made my way back inside to Shawn where I sat next to him, resting my head on his shoulder.
