Madison's POV
No matter how hard I tried, the smile on my face would not go away. It was almost stuck, like a tattoo that would never go away and remain on my skin for the rest of my life. My hair was damp, thrown into a messy bun as sprinkles of sand most likely stayed in some strands. Instead of Ross throwing me into the water like he always did, I took the initiative and shoved him when he wasn't looking.
I hadn't anticipated him grabbing my hand and pulling me down with him.
I had swallowed a good amount of salt water- my mouth had been open as I squealed in surprise. It was nasty and I couldn't stop coughing, but then I laughed. And laughed and laughed. The look he had on his face was absolutely priceless, his hair just wild he looked ridiculous that I had to laugh. He almost looked like a puppy that fell in a puddle.
Still adorable, though.
We were on our way home from the beach now, having bid his siblings and parents goodbye just as the sun was beginning to set. Though I had told Ross he could spend some time with his family, he easily dismissed me, saying he wanted to spend time with me instead. I knew we would be seeing them at Rocky's wedding- which I was slightly nervous for- but I didn't want him ignoring his family for me.
"I can spare a day, Mads." He had told me as we walked along the shore, the waves reaching our feet and getting them wet. "They understand. They're all in relationships."
I had no reason to feel guilty for wanting to spend time with him, it was only natural. But I knew he and his family were close and didn't want to stop him from hanging out with them. He usually didn't go a day without calling or texting them. He was so busy in the recording studio and taking care of me after the accident, he really didn't get to see them often.
I didn't want them to drift apart.
He had assured me that spending one day together with his family in close proximity wouldn't change anything, and when I still looked skeptical, he kissed me. His lips were so soft, so addicting, that I couldn't help but kiss back. He knew my weakness and wasn't afraid to use it.
Ross reached over the console to grab my hand, lacing our fingers together as he kept one hand on the wheel. I looked over at him, only to find him looking at me as we came to a red light. "You alright, there?"
He nodded, leaning over to kiss my cheek. "I just had a really good day. My family really liked you." He stepped on the accelerator as the light turned green, the line of cars continuing on.
"We only talked for a few minutes," I protested. "How can you tell?"
"Because anyone who doesn't like you is an idiot."
"You're a little biased, Ross."
"Doesn't mean it's not true." He shrugged. "But trust me, they really liked you. My mom couldn't stop smiling."
My lips twitched upwards. "Your mom's kinda adorable."
"She gets that a lot."
Our hands remained interlocked the rest of the ride home, and only when he parked in the driveway did I pull away, an unfamiliar car on the side of the street. I turned to Ross in confusion, only to find him sporting the same look. "Who do you think that is?"
He shook his head. "I have no idea."
My eyes widened as realization set in, my eyes sweeping over the car that held no passengers. "Ross, are they in the house?"
His own pair widened as well, and he quickly unbuckled his seatbelt, rushing out of the car yelling "Stay here."
Many thoughts were running around in my head as I nervously stared at our house. Who could possibly be in the house? I highly doubted it was a burglar- they wouldn't park right by our house for us to see.
