Ross's POV
I was more than relieved to have Madison talking to me again as if nothing had happened. No fights or arguments. I had somehow managed to get some ideas down for a song and just as I approached the entrance of the label office, I felt someone tap my shoulder.
"Hey, babe."
My eyes widened at the sight of my girlfriend, dressed in a tight dress and heels. "Carter? What are you doing here?"
"Didn't I tell you? Oh, yeah, you hardly had time for me so I couldn't really tell you that I got a job here as a secretary." She placed her hand on her hip, giving me a knowing look.
"O-Oh." I shoved my hands into my pockets, making my way inside as quickly as I could. I heard the sound of tapping heels behind me and before I knew it, Carter caught up with me, standing in front of me with her hands on my chest.
"What's wrong, Ross?" She gave me a puppy dog look as I avoided eye contact.
"Nothing. I'm busy. We can talk at lunch?" I pushed past her, knocking on one of the office doors and letting myself in for a meeting with the manager who had signed R5 to the label when we had just started out as a band.
The hour of the meeting passed and I left the room, trying to somehow be unnoticed when I noticed Carter sat at the office, working away at her laptop.
"Ross?" Her voice perked up behind me as she stood up, making her way towards me. "How did the meeting go?"
"Good. They're happy with the song I wrote." I glanced at her. I didn't mean to be this cold towards my girlfriend, but there were days when she really was getting on my nerves.
"Are you gonna show me the song?" She pressed herself against my chest, playing with the ends of my hair.
"No." I pecked her cheek, stepping away as I did so.
"Do you wanna go out for lunch?" She spoke softly and I nodded, leading her downstairs to the cafeteria. I ordered us some coffee and took a seat across from her, tapping my fingers against the mug when she spoke up, "Ross I love you and you know I do. Please tell me what's wrong." She reached her hand out to touch mine as I stared at it.
"Maddie-""Maddie?" She arched an eyebrow, "Did you just call me Maddie?" She crossed her arms over her chest.
"Carter, I didn't mean to. It just slipped out." I explained quickly.
"It slipped out because you think about her far too often Ross!" She stood up, leaving the coffee and running outside. I took a last sip of my coffee, paid the bill and followed her outside. When I reached her, she was sat on the bench with her head in her hands.
I nervously took a seat next to her, running my fingers through my hair. "Carter, it's honestly not like that. I didn't mean to call you Maddie, I swear." She looked up at me, sighing deeply.
"Okay Ross. I have something to tell you." She turned to face me and I did the same as I gave her a confused look. "You have to choose - me or Maddie?"
I stared at her with my jaw dropped open and my eyes wide. "You have to be kidding me, right?"
"No. I've never been more serious than now. Tell me the truth without sugarcoating it." She placed her hand on my knee as I thought about it for what seemed like an eternity. Madison was incredibly important me. No one could ever take her place - not even my girlfriend.
"I choose Madison." I mumbled, loud enough for her to hear.
"What?!" She stood up, her hands clenching into fists at her sides.
"I choose Maddie because she's my best friend. She seems to have more feelings than you, Carter-"
Carter scoffed, flailing her arms round, "Pfff, probably more feelings for you!"
"Just...don't say anything else, Carter, please. We're over."
