epilogue..

"ready for your first day of school?" i asked the small child in the back seat of my car.

"i guess," the four year old shrugged.

i chuckled, "well your daddy is very sorry he couldn't drop you off on your first day."

"it's okay, aunt mia." she smiled. "i like you the best."

i laugh, taking bryan's daughter out of her carseat and i grabbed her small hand to take her to the front of preschool. her hair was braided in a long neat fishtail braid that nadia had did before she left.

"hi, i'm ms. june." a woman in her early thirties approached us when we walked through her classroom. "and who is this?"

"i'm mia and this is my niece, amelia. say hi baby." i squat down to poke her stomach.

amelia musters up a hi, waving at ms. june. i stand back up, smoothing out my pantsuit.

"are you her legal guardian?" she asks.

"oh, no. her mom and dad are at work, so i took her. she has all her paper work in, i was just asked to do the drop off." i infromed.

"well amelia is good hands here," june smiled. "she'll fit right in."

i thank amelia's teacher and make my way out of the class, looking at my watch. if i hurry, i'll can make it to work on time.

"woah, i'm sorry," i say as i bump into someone coming in as i'm going out the doors.

"mia?"

"nate?"

i stand back and take a good look at him. "someone's really matured."

nate chuckled, "yeah... so have you." he eyed me up and down. "are you done with school? you still live with your dad?"

i shake my head. "no. after college, i got a nice job and moved out. i have a house sorta up in the hills" i say. "you?"

"still kickin it with swazz and the guys." he laughed. "thinking about actually taking this music thing serious, yanno?"

i nod and i look down at the small  child at his feet. "is this is your son?" i ask.

nate looks down at the boy and nods, "yup. this rugrat is kayson." he ruffles his son's curly brown hair that he must've gotten from nate. his skin was a creamy mocha color, just like his eyes. this kid is gonna break hearts- just like his father.

my eyes slightly widened. nate. with a kid. this is something i'd never thought i'd see. a lot can happen in four years.

"oh. wow." i admit.

"i know," nate laughed. "shocking. i accidentally got his mom pregnant a while back." i raise my eyebrows at him. "don't worry, we're not together."

"who said i was wondering?" i raise my eyebrows higher this time, scoffing almost.

the smug look on his face he always had when we were teens was clear on his face. he shrugged. "just a feeling." he smiled at me. "were you here dropping off your kid?"

i shake my head. "no. bryan and nadia ended up having a baby together and i just dropped her off."

nate's eyes widened. "bryan has a kid now?"

"yup," i nod. "almost as shocking as you."

"hey." he playfully scolded, causing us to lightly laugh. a comfortable silence filled the air.

"well, if you'll excuse me, i have to be at work soon." i smile at kayson and politely push myself past nate, going to my car which was parked right in front of us.

"you look really good, mia." nate called out to me. "what's your secret?" he jokes.

i smile before answering. "happiness." i open my car door, ready to get in.

"mia," nate calls again, getting my attention. "what if i want to see you again. or is there another shawn i have to worry about?"

my heart thumps, but i play it cool. "you know where to find me." i say with a shrug.

a boyish smile comes across his face, "your porch?"

"my porch."

"three am?"

"three am."

we smile at each other one last time before i get in my car and nate takes his son inside.

i finally realized, nate was right for leaving me yours ago. it did me good. i did get help, i helped myself find happiness. it was stupid of me to try and find happiness in a boy before i could find happiness in myself. now i'm a successful twenty five year old, with a job i like, a nice family, and a happy life.

being with nate was a seven and plus years of a rollercoaster. we had our ups and down, our good times and bad. sometimes it was fun, sometimes it was scary. but that's what love is. you never know what you're getting into and with who.

nate started off as a young, empty, boy that i found on my porch one night at three in the morning. nate lost his love and he wanted love. i wormed my way into his life, but that's none of our faults. i'm glad i found nate that day and i'm glad nate found me.

somehow we always find our way back together.

we were both empty kids who needed love but in different ways and different times. we loved each other. we gave each other purpose in some sort of way.

he was empty, i filled him. he emptied me, and he helped me fill myself up on my own.

i was fulfilled with life, i wasn't empty. and i have nate maloley to thank for that.
