Heading home

We decided to ride Phix home, which was about a mile away.

Since Phix could only take 3 of us, we decided not to bring Miku's parents.

"How exciting is this? We're going to ride a giant dog-lion!" Callie exclaimed.

Miku strapped Phix with a saddle, along with a scarf and hat, which I have to admit is pretty cute.

We all wore our own coats, and hats that Mrs. Keesh gave us.

On the back of Phix's saddle, was a small basket for our cargo.

It was already half full with our ice-skates from last night.

Mrs. Keesh filled the remaining space with her baked goods, wrapped in a blanket.

"Alright, you kids be careful out there." She warned, with a hug for all of us.

"We will, don't worry mom." Replied Miku as he climbed on Phix.

"Bye Mrs. K!" Said Callie as she climbed on next.

"Thanks for everything, and have a good night!" I added as I climbed on last.

Mr. Keesh opened the door for us as we started out.

"Bye kids." Said Mr. Keesh from the doorway.

"Bye!" We all said in unison, and waved at Miku's parents once more, before turning ahead to the long, icy trail.

As soon as Miku said "go", Phix rushed down the street like a wolf in the snow.

I held on to Callie, who screamed in excitement.

I turned back at Miku's house, which was slowly disappearing in the distance.

The air was cold as we rode, it was like a roller-coaster in the winter.

We kept riding nonstop, because you never know what danger is in the night.

I've never rode this fast before, Phix was faster than a car.

We rode for what seemed like half a mile.

We weren't in Miku's neighborhood anymore, but we weren't in mine either.

Half way through the path, we let Phix rest.

We stopped in the middle of an empty town, with lots of snow-covered trees.

From the path ahead, the road was covered in deep ice.

I took out the blanket sack full of treats and took out four.

I handed one to Callie and Miku, and fed one to Phix.

I ate one myself, too.

The sugary, warm cookie warmed my mouth, and tasted delicious, too.

If only there was milk. I was almost sure I heard Miku say.

But his voice was so quiet, and unreal, almost as if it was in my head.

I looked toward Miku. He was just playing with Phix.

He couldn't have been talking, or he would've been looking at me.

I walked up to him. "Hey, Miku." I said.

My breath showed in the air as a warm cloud against the bitter-cold air.

"Hey." He replied. "Did you say something just now?" I asked.

He looked at me, and smiled, almost evilly. "No I didn't...I was thinking it." He answered with a smirk.

I gave him a confused look. "Okay...?" I answered, about to walk away.

Don't you see? I heard once again.

I turned back at Miku. "See what?" I asked.

"See that you're one of us!" He answered, excited.

"Haha, no I'm not, you're being crazy again." I corrected.

Then how can you hear me, if I'm not talking?

I stared at him, wide eyed. He was right. His lips didn't move, I was reading his mind.

"Yes you can! I knew you were one of us." He bragged.

"Wait, so, what am I ?" I asked, unsure.

He thought for a moment.

"I don't know, I'm a mindreader, not a genius." He answered.

Then, he got up and gathered his things, getting ready for the rest of the way home.

I watched him, thinking about what he said.

Callie walked up to me. "Hey, what's wrong?" She asked.

"Nothing." I lied. "C'mon lets go." I said as I ran to Phix.

We all got on Phix and started to move forward.

Phix's paws clicked on the ice. The clicking got faster as he increased in his speed.

We rode for a couple minutes until we were as fast as before.

It got colder as it got darker.

We rode for another hour or so.

I looked up at the dark sky. The moon shone a pale white light down on us.

As we reached a fair distance, the ice started getting thinner. We were getting closer.

When we reached a point where the ice was very thin, Phix had to slow down.

We kept getting slower until Phix's clicking sound was a walking pace.

We decided to walk, afraid that Phix would break the ice.

Miku suggested wearing our ice-skates, but my stomach said otherwise.

We ended up walking the rest if the way.

Callie got tired soon, so we let her sit on Phix for a while.

We decided to take turns, it was Callie's turn now, and Miku was next, I was last.

I didn't mind walking, but the weather got really cold.

Soon we reached a sign that we were relived to see.
