Ava's POV:I left.
I left every last thing, person, and place further behind with each step I took. All I had were two bags slung on one arm and my snoring little brother in the other. A pocketful of enough change to get us somewhere to stay and his soft breaths were all that kept me motivated through the long late night hike in the streets of Chelsea. It felt like I was walking for hours and I was so desperate to find a bed.
Luckily, only a few minutes later I saw the sign for a hotel advertising actual affordable prices. Without hesitation, I turned towards their fluorescent lights and got to the front desk, I had been saving up for months for the moment I finally got the courage to escape it all, so thankfully when it came time for the rather dull man at the counter to ask for my payment, I could actually hand it over. It was the most satisfying feeling to get the keys to my room in my hand. It almost gave me a sense of accomplishment but I knew I had so much more left to do to even be semi okay again. At least this was a step.
I was able to get the room door open and set my bags down without waking Caden who was still sleeping soundly. I sighed softly as I carefully set him under the white sheets of the bed and watched him make himself cozy. I just stared as his chest rose and fell with each breath and couldn't help but think. He's been through so much and he's barely five years old. I never thought this time would come where it was actually just going to be me and him with no more fear to live in. There would be other fears of the real world that I knew I would have to except but I would do it in a heartbeat one thousand times if it meant that Caden wouldn't have to live in the worry he did before.
I ran a hand through my blonde hair as I turned away from him in search of my cigarettes. My fingertips finally landed on the carton after digging through my bag for a while. Stepping towards the door, I looked over to make sure he was in a deep enough sleep to not notice my absence. After I heard a few more loud snores, I walked to the outside of the front of the hotel with the hopes to ease my stresses with a quick cig. There was another man outside as well who had the same idea. He was leaned against the wall as he dug his hands into his black skinny jeans pocket for a lighter. His wild curly brown hair cover most of his face when he went to look down to light up. It was almost like the wind blew just right as he looked up to show his tired looking eyes.
I shook my head slightly to break myself out of my odd stare and pulled one of my own out. I reached into pants pockets in hopes to find my lighter but I wasn't so lucky. I must've forgot to grab it. I groaned quietly to myself in frustration. All I was craving was the taste of that nicotine to ease my mind even just for a minute. I looked at the man in the black then back to my cigarette and took a deep breath.
"Erm, excuse me," I awkwardly stepped a little towards his direction as he looked over, raising his eyebrows some. "Yeah?"
"Could I use a light? Seem to have lost mine." I tried to say without stuttering, I'm not very good at being all social. He laughed slightly and smiled this charming smile,
"Of course, it's no problem!" His hands reached for the red bic lighter again and he flicked it then moved it towards me some, "May I?" He said with his heavy British accent, motioning towards my cig. I nodded with a soft smile as I put it against my lips as he lit it. It felt so therapeutic finally getting to take that first inhale.
"What has you out so late in this cold?" He mumbled as he leaned back against the wall and I did the same. "Just really needed this. I've been trying to kick this little habit but I think we all know how that goes." I said quietly as I looked at the passing traffic in the road ahead of us.
"Definitely, same here but I've just come to accept I need it. Either that or I go mad. It makes this not seem so bad," He chuckled as he blew out a gentle cloud of smoke. He seemed so interesting. His loud and friendly voice didn't seem to match his tired looking face. Those chocolate brown eyes looked like they held such a deep story, but I tried not to read too deep into it because I'm sure after this I won't see him again.
"So where'd you come from for you to be at a hotel? Are you on vacation or something?" He asked as he turned to look at me making me suddenly feel self-conscious. "It's a rather complicated story but what about yo-"I started to say when he cut me off with his mouth slightly dropped open,
"That's one hell of a bruise you got, what happened there?" He gasped as his gently traced the big purple mark on my cheek. He was very curious for a fact and didn't seem to have much of a filter. I gulped and took another puff while I quickly looked away from him and back to the street lights. "It really wasn't much of anything," I whispered as I tried to clear my throat. I felt him still staring as he started to stutter out," I'm so sorry I should've asked..."
"It's okay, no worries." I mumbled and looked back at him. He stared with his mouth still ajar some then it suddenly turned into a soft smile as I kept looking at him. "You look so cool," He said as he let out this beautiful laugh making me smile and chuckle some. "Wasn't really what I was going for but thank you, what's your name?"
"Matty Healy, what about you?"
"I like that name, its pretty. I'm Ava Moore."
"Well Ava Moore, its about 4am and I've seemed to have finished my cigarette so I think I'm going to go." I almost felt disappointed as he said that, it was weird. "But I don't want this to mean I can't see you again. How can I make sure I get to see your beautiful face again?" He did that charming little smirk again. I smiled back at him playfully and said, "I don't know about you but I've got a phone number."
"What a coincidence! I got one of those too, I think you should have it." He laughed with a slight wink as he pulled out his phone. He put it on the new contact screen and handed it to me to put in my number. He grinned so wide as he put it back in his pocket, "So I'll definitely get to see you around." He said as we both went back inside. He started to go to the right hall and I went to the left. "Sweet dreams love!" He called out before he opened some door causing me to smile in response. I managed to somehow sleep alittle more sound that night after that and having some weight off my shoulders.
