Courtney's POV
They can't be dead! No! It's just impossible. Fucking hell, they aren't dead! This isn't happening! They aren't dead! These thoughts travelled around my head as I lay on the floorboards of their boss' office. They aren't allowed to be dead! It's just impossible! They were alive before! Was Megan involved in the car accident? What about Nikki? Adam? Samantha? Kate?
This is the worst year since, Lucy passed away! That year was the year to forget! Lucy death, Lucas' disappearance, Dad's behaviour and a shitload of other stuff. Why is my life so messed up!
"You can't go in there," I hear a female voice yell.
Who can't come in here? Who is outside?
I open my eyes to see Ashton sitting down next to me. I was wrapped in blankets and had a pillow under my feet.
I slowly begin to sit up. Ashton looks at me, then grabs a drink bottle. He slips some pills out of his pocket and into my hand.
Pills? Is he trying to drug me? What even are they?
"Panadol. For your head," he explains. What happened to my head? All I remember is being lied to about James' and Hanna's death. It didn't happen!
I take the panadol and drink half the water from the bottle.
"Come on. I think Boss is in the lounge room," he says. He stands up and helps me to my feet. I let the blankets, wrapped around me drop to the floor. Why so many blankets?
He grabs my wrist and helps me walk out the door. I saw the girl who dyed my hair, Amy or whatever her name was, sitting in the hallway. As we approach she gets up.
"I'm so glad you're ok," she says, hugging me.
What happened to me? She's hugging me? She's a total stranger and she's hugging me?
I just give her a small smile and keep walking with Ashton. She grabs a water bottle and follows us up the stairs.
We get to the lounge room and their boss was sitting staring at a television, with his back to us.
"It has just been confirmed that two family members of missing teen, Courtney Naidoo have died. The fatal car accident happened on a deserted, country road in Melbourne's north. The drunk driver, on the wrong side of the road, died in hospital early this morning. This has taken Melbourne's road deaths to 89 already this year. Police are still looking into Courtney's disappearance and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers. Apparently this isn't the first time, this has happened to the family. I am joined with Nicole Connors, a close family friend."
Does that mean James and Hanna are dead? What if they are? Oh God! Maybe their boss is going to let me join them! I can't take this anymore.
I shift my weight and the floorboards creak. Their boss grabs the remote and switches off the television. Ashton starts pulling me towards the couch, opposite to where their boss was sitting.
"Courtney, I'm sorry to be the bearer of more bad news but you need to know this. The person who had Andre kidnap you," he pauses taking a deep breathe. Ashton's hand reached across and squeezed my hand. His words flashed through my mind. 'You've got to be strong. Betrayal is the worst feeling, but you've got to keep your head up and be strong.'
"Your father had his gang kidnap you. As Andre was in there as a spy, he had to prove himself as the newbie. But I swear on his life, my life and your life he did nothing to you. He has a trouble, identical twin brother. He was the one who. Who, yeah. Listen Courtney, I'm so sorry this has happened to you. And I know hearing that from your kidnapper is just totally weird but listen. You were here for part of a deal with Junior but now you're here for your own protection. We were planning on letting you go before Luca had his accident, but now with that, it can't happen. I'm really sorry, but you're going to have to stay here for the next couple of months. But trust me, no one is going to hurt you when you're here. You will also have more freedom, although you will have to use a fake ID."
