I hate lab class. It's not the professor that makes me hate it, but the class itself. I never understand what are the things we need to do even though I pay attention to what the teacher says. I don't know how everyone does it. The good thing is that my partner, Trevor, always does most of the work and I only assist on the simple stuff, and since he likes it it's even better because he doesn't complain or tells the teacher I don't help him with the assignments.
The bell rings and I look around the room to find Trevor, but he isn't here yet. I hope he isn't late. The last thing I want is to start today's session on my own. I'm so bad at this that I could literally make an explosion by mixing the most insignificant substances in the world, it's like cooking, I'm so bad at it.
"Miss Cadwell, can you come here for a minute?" Mr. Johnson says and I nod. I hope he doesn't ask me to do today's work alone.
"Yes?" I say, trying to look confident.
"Mr. Mackenzie won't be coming anymore." He starts saying. "He got accepted in a science program in New York and he just wanted to let you know that he's sorry for not telling you before." He says with a serious look, "He was pretty busy the last few days to talk to anyone I believe." He informs.
"Oh." Is the only thing I say. I can't believe that bastard let me here. He knew I was stupid with this stuff and he still left for some weird program in New York. I knew I should have never given him a piece of my peanut butter-chocolate chip granola when he was hungry, he's no good to trust.
I'm glad he made it though, it must have been difficult to enter. Good for him, I'm proud.
"Give me a minute and I will assign you a new partner." He kindly says, "You can sit in the meantime."
"Thank you." I say and smile.
I don't care who my new partner is, I know he or she will never be as good as Trevor, he was one of a kind. It was easy to get an A in this class because of him, but now with him gone I hope this doesn't become I nightmare. But I'll be positive, I don't see anyone struggling much with this class, so that must be a good sign.
Mr. Johnson walks towards me with a paper on his hand and I start to get a tiny bit nervous. "Let's go." He says and I stand up from my chair. We walk to the other opposite side of the room to find my new partner.
No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. No! Please no.
"Mr. Harries, since Mr. Lucas is never here and Trevor is gone, welcome your new partner", he excitedly says, "Miss Cadwell." I stand beside the teacher and try my best to smile. This will be so awkward in so many levels.
"Cool." Liam says and smiles.
"All set then. Let's begin!" Mr. Johnson says and walks way, leaving us alone to work.
I stand there looking at Liam for a moment before saying or doing something. "You can sit down, Allie. I don't bite." He jokes.
I smile and sit down next to him. Hell, this does feel weird. "So, how come Lucas never comes?" I ask, making conversation.
"You know how he is." He says and turns his sight to me, "He's high most of the time and doesn't know what he's doing. Having him here would be like putting a watermelon in a microwave." He says and I laugh at his example.
"Well, I'm not good at this either." I honestly say.
"Don't worry. I usually do it all by myself." He says and I nod.
"I still want to help though, but maybe I'll need and extra explanation." I tell him. I mean it, I don't mind working or doing half of the work but I need to understand to do it right.
