Mirrors and Masks

I walk over to the mirror

An endless silver lake of reflection

I gaze into eyes

That are supposed to belong to me

Instead, I stand confused

I don't see myself

I see a girl with a mask

As if trying to hide what she feels inside

As if trying to be something else

Something other than herself

The eyes behind the mask bore into me

Her mouth a thin, straight line

Here nose moves slowly, gently, softly, deftly

Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out

All she does is stare

A hand creeps up to her face--

My face

Feeling for the edge of the mask

A second hand joins it

Working its way around, mirroring its twin

Slowly, the mask is lifted off

Removing and revealing

Those eyes stare back at me with familiarity

But the person I find now in my presence

Is someone I barely recognize at all...
