Mirrors and Masks
I walk over to the mirror
An endless silver lake of reflection
I gaze into eyes
That are supposed to belong to me
Instead, I stand confused
I don't see myself
I see a girl with a mask
As if trying to hide what she feels inside
As if trying to be something else
Something other than herself
The eyes behind the mask bore into me
Her mouth a thin, straight line
Here nose moves slowly, gently, softly, deftly
Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out
All she does is stare
A hand creeps up to her face--
My face
Feeling for the edge of the mask
A second hand joins it
Working its way around, mirroring its twin
Slowly, the mask is lifted off
Removing and revealing
Those eyes stare back at me with familiarity
But the person I find now in my presence
Is someone I barely recognize at all...
