This is, personally, one of my favorite chapters so far. See what's next! I do not own any of the characters in the Divergent series.
a_random_kitten is another person in my Divergent group. She is the Candor Leader!!!!!
CHAPTER THREE
TOBIAS POV
After about an hour of looking through data of Tris’s initiation and watching her fear landscape over and over, I finally ask a question that has been alert in my mind since the very beginning.
“Why are you collecting all of this stuff?” I ask.
He stays quiet for a while, and then looks back up at me. “I’m as confused as you are. I’m just her ‘jerk brother’- why would she save my life? I’ve been trying to reconstruct her life from the point when we chose separate factions until we met again later… I, I want to know that piece of her that I never got to experience. I want to learn who she is…”
I notice that he says is, not was but I nod anyway, understanding. He lost so much of her life when she changed factions that he can never know, just like how I can never really know who she was until I was her instructor.
“I think I should get going now,” I say, “Thank you for showing me all this. I needed to know…”
“No problem,” he hesitates, patting down his messy hair, “It’s the least I can do…”
I nod, not needing to know any more. I walk out the door and breathe in the chilly nighttime air. I walk down alleys and across streets. I walk through the Abnegation sector and find Tris’s childhood home, still unsold and unoccupied. My chest feels tight, just as it used to at any remembrance of my father or his cruelties toward me.
Without deciding, I walk up the steps to Tris’s old home and open the door (as the Abnegation felt locks were a selfish defense), feeling my way through the darkness. I climb up the stairs and find what used to be Tris’s old room. I find the bed and lie down upon it, breathing in the scent of her pillow. It hasn’t been slept on since Choosing Day two years ago. I fall asleep quickly, with Tris in mind.

I awake early in the morning, groggy with sleep, and stand to look out the window. I can see the two prongs of the Hub from here. I make my way away from the window and out the door of Tris’s room. I want this house. I need to know her better.
I need this house.
+++
Later that day, I walk over to the Hub, where homes are assigned to Chicago settlers. There is one man in front of me, talking to a blonde, Erudite woman with glasses, Cara.
“I want this house, right in the center of the Abnegation Sector. I hear it was owned by one of your ex-leaders,” the man says, pointing at a map on the wall. I realize that the house he wants, is the very same as the one that I slept in just last night.
“Stop!” I scream, pushing in front of the man. “That was Tris’s home. Please, Cara. I need it!”
“Why? Don’t you already have an assigned house?” Cara asks quizzically.
“It’s Tris’s! You Erudite really don’t care do you? I knew you were just as bad as the rest of them! I, I’ll trade in my old house!”
“Well, seeing as you have been relative to this area for quite some time, and you have something to trade, I suppose you are more eligible for the home, if that is okay with this young gentleman standing here.”
The man stares at me, as if I am some wild animal, ready to pounce, which I might as well be.
“Okay then, the house is yours,” Cara says, winking. I feel like another weight is off of my chest. Not only do I have Tris’s home, but someone other than I understand my urgency.
I smile back, sign my name, and push my way past the man that tried to take Tris from me. “Never again, will I lose her,” I tell myself.
Never again.
