CHAPTER 29

CALEB POV

I laid there crying the entire night. At one point in time, I fell asleep, waking to the dreary fact that I was still alive... still existing...

I squint at the morning light coming through the curtains and for a split second I see her. She smiles and I reach out to her, but she leaves in a wisp of smoke.

Cara.

I stand up, shaking. I walk towards the dusty desk where I threw her journal last night. I grab it and rip it into pieces, watching the snowy pieces of paper drift drearily down to the ground. I lick the salty tears from my lips and turn my back at the useless shreds of journal. I walk over to her computer, turning it on with a whirring sound.

I begin to look through her lab notes, looking at her cancer research. I feel almost as if I am invading her privacy, but I quickly think back to her journal, sparking an immediate wave of anger. I scroll down, pressing the keys harder as my anger escalates until I finally just throw the computer to the floor, watching the pieces fly everywhere.

I head towards the door, throwing it open and immediately run home. I slam the door behind me and cry, sobbing and losing my breath. My vision turns blurry with tears and i inch my way towards what I believe is my death. I dig in the drawer for the syringes.

I take them out, looking at them. One of them is the memory serum from Abnegation, the other is the execution for the Dauntless who choose to die rather than being Factionless, and the last is the serum used to save Tris so long ago by putting her in a paralysis.

Forget...

Live...

Die...

I stick each in my arm slowly, feeling the sharp pinch of each. I am in control of my fate...

Only one will work I realize, for they all counter each other. Whatever serum works first will decide my fate.

I take a deep breath and plunge every syringe further down...
