CHAPTER 17

TOBIAS

Somehow, I end up in front of the Hancock building, looking up at the highest windows, thinking of how hard it must be to look down from one of those. I enter the elevator, feeling my stomach churn, not only from the increase in elevation, but what waits at the top. I exit the doors, just as they open, and become absorbed by the dull, cold atmosphere. I walk down the hall to number 107 and stand there, debating my actions.

Should I face her? Should I succumb to my emotions?

Should I accept my instincts?

I knock on the door, despite my nerves and listen to the shuffling of feet from inside. The door cracks open, and I see Christina's puffy face, probably from tears. When she sees me, she slams the door and cries, "You don't have to do this! ...I'm no Tris; I'm just a pathetic girl following false hopes."

"But I want to do this," I protest, "Like you said, I can't mope around, I have to move on. I've always felt something for you... please just let me in."

I hear the doorknob turn and I see her again, her face a bit brighter, but still sunken. I walk inside and stand in the living room, waiting for something, anything. I see her sit down on the couch off to the side of the room and do the same, nervous. I haven't felt this way since... since Tris.

I sit awkwardly, unknowing of what is going to happen in these next few minutes. I look at her, tears in my eyes. I notice her hand is lying between us, and I grab it, holding it and smiling nervously at her.

"Are you Dauntless enough?" she asks me.

"Most definitely," I say smiling.

She tilts her head up to kiss me lightly on my cheek, which I accept, returning the favor.

"I have something to show you," she says.

After a while of walking, we arrive at the place where the nighttime paintball war took place, Navy Pier. We go over to the place where we hid the flag on the Merry-Go-Round. She motions for me to sit on one of the chipped horses and goes somewhere behind my line of sight.

Suddenly, I hear a loud alarm and the dull lights on and around the horses begin to flicker until they are all on. I feel a slight lurch and the Merry-Go-Round starts to move, the horses going up and down as if they were running.

Christina appears and she hops on the moving machinery. I reach out my hand, a smile breaking through on my face. She takes it, smiling back, and I help her get on behind me. For a while we just sit there laughing as it revolves, and eventually, I grab her arms and hang them around me. We ride until the yellow sun falls below the horizon.

When we finally leave the ride, I am laughing and smiling. We head over to the edge of the pier and sit on the edge, talking. After a while, I hold her, my arm awkward around her, unable to wipe this crazy smile off my face. And that's when she kisses me, her lips touching mine. There is nothing stopping us.

But "nothing" always goes wrong...
