CHAPTER 20
CALEB POV
After Tobias leaves, I sit down. How could this be? I search through all of the drawers, looking for it. I feel horrible for lying to Tobias, but I had to. I will figure this out. I will solve this.
I look at the paper Tobias gave me in disgust. How could I even bring myself to lying about such a thing? I look at the paper once more and put it away deep in a drawer.
+++
I look at the window to make sure no one is looking and I head out the door. I walk across the street and down the block slightly to where Cara resides. I see the tall house way before I reach it. It dwarfs the rest of the block with its three stories. I knock on the door, standing patiently on the porch. When she doesn't answer I ring the doorbell. I hear a shuffling from inside and then a loud thump. Cara opens the door, smiling as she sees who it is.
She notices my pale face and gives a worried look, waving me inside. I sit down on the couch exhausted, the haunting memories of those notes still in my brain, burning, burning, burning!
"What is it?" Cara asks.
"The notes... someone stole them from me," I utter, my breath shaking.
"Wait, which ones?" her face turning pale and worried.
"The cloning notes... the ones we worked on together..."

I hurry back home, Cara running behind me. We never meant any harm by writing those notes, but they were secret for a reason. It involves human sacrifice in order to fill the clone with blood. I unlock the door, fumbling and yelling in frustration. The door finally opens. I turn on the lights and run to the drawer.
"Cara. We have to do something about this. Burn it, sabotage it, hide it, I don't care! But we can't let him get it again... he could use the clone for anything..."
"How did he get it? He wouldn't have been smart enough to find it and understand what it's important was..."
"I... I admit I thought it was you who..."
"Well, you can trust me. Just know that much."
"Wait, I have an idea," I say.
I rip the paper in to three pieces.
"It is too valuable to waste," I explain, "This way no-one will be able to use it without having all three pieces. I hand her one of them, keeping two for myself. "I'm giving one to Tobias, so he can guard that part. Hide your portion, and I will hide mine."
"It's a deal," she says.
She takes her paper, crumpling it slightly. She walks out the door. I follow her onto the front porch. She turns suddenly, looking at me. We lean into each other, kissing passionately. We have tried to keep it secret for so long...
We hear a noise and we part. She walks across the street, turning only to wave goodbye. I head inside, locking the door behind me. That question follows me where ever I go.
What did Marcus plan to do with the clone?
