After Allissa, everyone rests a variety of flowers on Kate's grave. I remember how much she loved flowers, seeing this many flowers would've made her smile her beautiful smile and her sparkling eye crystals gleam brighter than the sun.
I step in front of her grave. "Here rests a beautiful woman with an even more beautiful heart. Her eyes and smile could brighten the gloomiest day, hopefully she'll brighten heaven with that same light. Goodbye, Katelynn Hadden, we'll never forget you."
A crane lowers her coffin into the ground. I can't watch this. I burst into tears, and I'm unable to stop, no matter how hard I try. My tears leak into the soil, turning it into the mud similar to the dirt surrounding her coffin.
I cry until sunset that evening. The stranger from earlier steps in front of Kate's grave, my attention focuses towards him. He rests roses similar to the ones from her wedding on the tombstone. He glances up at the pink and orange masterpiece, a sniffle escapes him.
"Hey, Kate. It's me, Aron, or Deucey as you called me." He starts, tracing the writing on her grave.
Oh my god. Deuce is here?! I want to beat the shit out of him, but I restrain myself, realizing that I'm holding Alex.
"I told you I'd come back. I'm afraid that I was too late." He sniffles.
"I just wanted to tell you that I'm sorry about that time I made you go skinny dipping with me in high school, and that we nearly got arrested that night. But I didn't know it was private property, and hey we got to ride in a police car with nothing but a towel on." He pauses for a minute to enjoy the last minute of the sunset before it fades to stars and a black sky.
"It was fun, in fact it was the second best night of my life." He smiles sheepishly before continuing "And I could tell you did too. Even though you didn't want to, you still went for me. So, thank you. You were the best girlfriend I ever had. I miss you and think of you often. Before I go, I hope your children turn out as amazing as you were. I know their fathers hate me, but I'd love to meet them someday. Also, thanks for coming to my first solo concert, it meant a lot to me. I was gonna tell you then, but you left before I even got the chance. I hope your family is ok; it's a shame they lost the most important member. You.
However, instead of crying about your life being over, I'm gonna smile because it happened. Goodbye, Kate. You were one of the best things that ever happened to me."
I didn't know that he felt all that, let alone knew her.
Remembering what he said, I shout "Deuce!"
He stops walking, and turns around to look at me. "What do you want?"
"Remember how you said you wanted to meet her children?"
"Yeah."
"Well, meet her son, Alexander." I set Alex gently in his arms.
A smile stretches like elastic across his face as Alex's eyes open wide, revealing their beauty.
"He has Kate's eyes." Deuce whispers, staring intensely into them, nearly hypnotizing him.
"Treasure your son, Matthew." He adds, tussling Alex's curls.
"Thanks, I will."
"Also, could you not tell anyone that I was here?" He asks, giving Alex back to me.
"Sure." I smile. "See you in hell, Aron."
He snickers "Yeah, same to you faggot."
I watch as he disappears towards his car in the black night sky, and the headlights drive off in the distance.
His visit is the secret I kept all of my life.
