“The most beautiful smile is the one that breaks its way through the tears.”
Chapter 4- Gardens
Johnathan's breathing was ragged by the time he reached the palace and he knew that if his heart were to beat it would have beaten so loud, so fast. Regretful isn't even the word to describe how he felt at that moment. He was so angry at himself for letting his temper get the best of him. The human girl didn’t even do anything wrong! She was simply curious and she had every right to be.
But he was sick and tired of it. He was sick of people always looking at him and his race like that. Heartless monsters that only care about blood, but he wasn't heartless nor was he a monster. He actually cared for everyone, humans OR not, he respected them. His own words that he said to Ella kept haunting him all the way to his room and when he fell on his king size bed in his fancy looking bedroom. His bedroom was the size of a penthouse with walls painted a creamy colour and wooden floor. Johnathan tugged at the roots of his hair and groaned in frustration as he thought million thoughts.
‘Did I really have to scare her off like that?! Couldn’t I just contain my f-cking self?!’
He thought angrily. A knock on the door broke him from his deep thoughts and he sighed mumbling ‘come in’ to whoever was at the door.
The door opened and Edward walked in frowning, in a flash he was sitting next to Johnathan on the bed and was staring down at him.
“What is wrong bro? Your thoughts are all over the place I could hear them from the garden.” Edward said. Johnathan looked back up at his brother and sighed his rage and anger has turned to sadness and self-pity by now and he looked so tired and worn out.
“I scared her off.” He paused “and I might have said some really hurtful words oh! And I demanded a little and I might or might not have called her Elaria.” Johnathan said covering his face with his big hands.
‘And I called her a slave.’ He thought knowing his brother could hear his thoughts clearly as if he was saying them out loud.
“Do you think I messed up?” Johnathan asked his voice muffled because of his hands poking his right eye out from between his long fingers he looked at his brother pleadingly.
“I think you have totally f-cked up bro.” Edward said matter-of-fact
“Why thank you for making me feel better.” Johnathan said bitterly, Edward chuckled and shrugged.
“Just trying to be honest.” He said smiling. Johnathan let his hand slide away from his face and glared up at his younger brother.
“Then stop trying please.” He sighed; Edward nodded biting back a mocking smile.
“Anyway, I came here to remind you that you have a date with Princess Serena.” Edward said in distaste, Johnathan’s eyes widened and he groaned.
“Do I have to go?” Johnathan whined and rolled onto his stomach and buried his face in his feather filled pillow. His brother smiled at him sympathetically and patted his back.
“Can’t I say I am sick? “Johnathan asked, Edward raised his eye brow and shook his head from side to side.
“Seriously?!” he said “If I was in your place I would get my ass up and go right now wouldn’t want father to drive a wooden stick through your heart.”
Johnathan rolled his eyes but got up and walked towards the door” Fine then, Where is she?” he asked.
“In the back garden.” Edward answered grinning slyly. ”Oh! It is going to be amazing to watch.” He then sensed his brother’s glare on him and quickly snapped his mouth shut. “Good luck though, you will need it.” Edward said placing his legs on the bed and crossing his arms behind his head. Johnathan agreed before he rushed out towards the garden silently praying he would be able to control his anger and not snap his fiancée’s head off

The browns’ house was quite big for a human family. The house was two stories and made of brick, the house was painted off-white and had many glass windows, the roof was made of wood and painted a gray colour. The surroundings of the house were gardens. The gardens were beautiful huge trees were planted their leaves were colourful, some pink, some green, some orange and some red. The grass was tall that it was almost knee-length. Sun flowers rose and poppies and other kinds of flowers were planted neatly, a small pond was present at the center of the right side of the front garden birds were standing around the pond drinking from it and jumping around happily and peacefully.
Ella sighed as she lay back on the shorter grass her arms crossed behind her head as she started up at the clouded sky. The top she was wearing was blue and sleeveless, she was wearing tight black skinny jeans and her feet were bare. She was fully aware that she had only fifteen minutes to get ready before the noble man arrived to pick her up for lunch but she didn’t care. She just wanted to lay down and stare up at the sky all day if she could. But she couldn’t she was smarter than that she knew she had to go change, she wasn’t going to risk the safety of her family and friends. She sighed again and tried to get up but couldn’t find the strength to do so.
“Do you miss her?” a voice came from her right, Ella turned her head to look at her sister that was lowering herself down slowly next to her.
“Miss who?” Ella asked half knowing who her sister was talking about.
“Ellie, Do you miss her?” Elena asked her sister a sad frown covered Ella’s face as she nodded slowly.
“Winter used to be her favourite season.” Ella continued. “I remember how she was always curious as to why our garden never gets covered by snow.”
“I know, sadly she never got to find out” Ella said sadly as she finally found the courage to get up.
“Where are you going?” asked Elena as she looked up at her younger sister.
“To change, I have to go on a date.” Ella said in disgust.
“With Daniel?” Elena asked smirking. Ella shook her head ’NO’ “with a vampire.” Was all she said before sprinting to the house and up to her bedroom. Ella’s room was painted light pink, white curtains covered the floor to ceiling windows; the double bed was covered in light blue covers and a desk with a white chair in front of it sat next to the bed. At the far end of the room was a door that leads to the bathroom and next to it was another door that leads to her walk-in closet.
Ella opened the door to her closet and walked in; she looked around for something good to wear and finally decided on a loose white dress. The dress has wrist long sleeves and the hem reached to just below Ella’s knees a golden belt was circled around her thin waist and the collar of the dress was high. She matched the dress with heeled white boots that reached several inches below her knees. She let her hair flow down to her waist in brown waves as she looked up at the clock that sat above the dresser and saw it was 11:57. Panicked she quickly took a last look at herself in the mirror before racing down the stairs to her front door she had only time to take a deep breath before the doorbell rang.
‘Here we go.’ She thought as she placed her hand on the doorknob and turned it.
