Chapter 14: That Fateful Origin *Don't forget the link to emotional music while reading*
[Levi’s POV]
Many may recognize him as a teenager from one of the wealthiest families of humanity. He is known as a mysterious rich boy who has spent most of his life home schooled by his parents, who are renowned scholars. No one really knew him until he enrolled in Shingeki Academy as a freshman. Of course there were many rumors that had spread across Shingeki Academy. The female students theorized that he was actually the prince who spent all his life anonymously in the castle and had enrolled in Shingeki Academy to experience the ordinary lives of his citizens. The students continued to theorize and fantasize about this “new” student but they never discovered his true identity.
Their beloved Levi was an orphan, born in the worst possible conditions. Before entering in the care of the Reiss’, Levi’s parents were ostracized outside of the walls. He watched his parents suffer the fate of death from the Titans when he was barely an infant. Levi was fortunate enough to have survived the ordeal. Unfortunately, soon after the incident, human traffickers took the young infant in as a slave.
The young man worked for the three filthy men (who he referred to as pigs) up to the age of thirteen. Although he was raised by unintelligent thugs, he spent most of his time educating his own self. The human traffickers were far from parents, which made Levi an independent young man. They only taught him how to commit crimes and fend for himself. For several years Levi planned on escaping the dungeon of slavery he was forced into. But the young Levi felt attached to the men for saving him from the Titan’s land.
On the night when the three men had kidnapped a small girl, Levi was able to escape from his cell. As he was escaping the area he was alarmed by the sounds of murder. Levi went to investigate and noticed two children, a boy and a girl, who were able to murder the three human traffickers. The children both fled immediately but Levi approached the men in concern for their wellbeing. “Why are you so worried about us… your kidnappers?” One of the men asked. “Because you saved me!” Levi cried in fear of their deaths. “What are you babbling about you retard? We took you from a guy…” The man stated. “Who?!” Levi asked in shock. “If I remember… that man was a doctor… but that won’t matter you’ll always be a thug like how we raised you hehe…” Those were his last words he uttered to Levi. “Why is this my fate?” Levi pondered.
The military police investigated the hideout and enrolled Levi at an orphanage. Later on, when a couple was delivering Christmas presents for all the orphans, they both felt a strong connection towards Levi. He was alone by the window staring at the snowfall. “Why aren’t you opening your presents with all the other children?” Mother Reiss asked. “It’s my birthday today.” Levi responded. “Well that’s special! Congratulations!” She cheered. “I don’t like my birthday.” Levi stated. “Why?” Mother Reiss asked. “My parents died on this day. I doubt you could bring them back to me as a present.” Levi said. She looked into his eyes and saw emptiness. “Don’t look at me so sympathetically Miss.” Levi angered. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you.” She apologized. “I’m different from everyone here. My fate is different… I shouldn’t exist.” Levi said. “Do you think you can change your own fate?” Father Reiss asked. “I’ve heard of people doing so, but only in fairy tales sir.” Levi answered.
This conversation led Mother and Father Reiss to investigate on Levi’s past with the owners of the orphanage. Even though they were informed of Levi’s criminal and lowly past and did not desire to take in an orphan, they took him in. “Why did you adopt me? I’m only going to be a burden for such a renowned family.” Levi asked. “Such a child shouldn’t bear such a burden.” Father Reiss answered. “So?” Levi responded. “What if I told you I could help you forget your past?” Father Reiss announced. Levi looked up in bewilderment, “Impossible this is my fate.” Levi responded. “Levi, our only son we raised privately was exiled and condemned to death. We’re a couple who are fated to live without children. I think we can exchange everything we’ve both missed… we can cheat fate.” Mother Reiss expressed, kindly holding out her hand to Levi. “We can give you everything you’ve ever desired.” Father Reiss proposed.
[Present]
“Hey Levi-kun stop day dreaming when I’m talking to you!” Erwin commanded. “Sorry you’re really boring…” Levi yawned. “You shouldn’t treat your boss like this.” Erwin whined. “Whatever” “Does Eren know you’re here?” “It doesn’t matter.” “It would be a shame if I took advantage of this situation then!” Erwin boasted. “Don’t you dare touch him again or I’ll cut off your gentiles Erwin.” Levi threatened.
“That kid really changed you, I like it.” Erwin commented. “He’s everything to me. I rather die than live in a world without him.” Levi said. “You’d probably die for him one of these days, knowing how reckless and defenseless that kid is.” Erwin stated. “I just hope my father comes around.” Levi sighed. “Stop lying. You know you’re giving up your entire life with your family for this kid.” Erwin responded. “I was willing to give up everything for them. That’s why I think they’ll accept me… at least by heart.” Levi said. “Legally to protect their nobility… don’t they…” Erwin thought. “It’s fine. I’ve been ready.” Levi said.
“Unlike me you’re from a more prestigious family Levi. You shouldn’t throw away the fate your family bestowed upon you for a kid. I would hate to see you alone.” Erwin argued. “Will I really be alone?” Levi asked. “You know it’s impossible to change your fate…” Erwin said. “There’s a way to cheat fate… you just have to live with someone else’s fate.” Levi said. Erwin glared at Levi and had an expression as if he had the greatest epiphany. “I never understood how a slightly elderly couple could have such a young son.” Erwin commented. “I think I’ll see you another day.” Levi said. “Hey Levi, did you hear the old rumor about that one noble family whose child was exiled outside of the walls because of an affair?” Levi froze in front of the door. “I wouldn’t have guessed earlier… you looked too similar to them… have you ever wondered about that?” Erwin suggested. “I guess there’s a reason you’re known as a genius.” Levi praised.
