Samantha Collins:
"Aria! It came!" I screamed down the phone to my friend Arianna Rosser.
"Mine too! Right, open it in 3, 2, 1!" she instructed. I opened the letter from the Texas Prairie University.
Dear Samantha,
We are delighted to offer you a place at the Texas Prairie University here in Morganville this September with an advanced placement. You're course list is included in this acceptance letter along with you dormitory room assignment.
We look forward to seeing you this September,
The Founder of Morganville.
"I got in!" Aria yelled.
"Me too! Right, who's your roomie?" I looked at my assigned room. Room 4D, sharing with.... "Oh my God, we're roomies!!!" I laughed, flopping back onto my bed and kicking my legs in the air.
"This, is going to be awesome! Did you tell your parents you applied early?"
"No. They don't even know I'm here half the time, does it matter if I just pack up and leave?" I sighed, thinking of me driving down to Morganville with all my stuff and leaving my neglecting parents behind.
"Are you sure you want to do it that way, Sammy? I mean, they are your only family other than your cousin Shane." Aria pointed out, making me long to be with Shane and his wife in Morganville already.
"Yeah, I'm sure. What do you think you're going to major in, anyway? For me, Art, English and History." This was the ultimate distraction for Aria, school.
"Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Alchemy. It's on the list, so I'm taking it." she replied.
"Isn't that like, turning lead into gold? Magic, right?"
"Kind of. It's turning one type of atom into another. It's a type or hermetic art, but many people called it witchcraft when it was well known." Aria explained, making me switch off. We'd been best friends for nearly 15 years, but she still could bore me to death.
"Aria, Aria, Arianna, Earth to Aria. For God's sake Arianna, shut up!" silence. "Thank you. When are you planning on leaving? The sooner the better for me, so I might leave about the end of July."
"My parents will probably want to come down with me, so I might come down about half way through August or something. Class sign up isn't until September 3rd, so we can have half a month to properly adjust to living with each other."
"Speaking of parents, can I stay with you tonight? They've just gotten back and are already arguing." I asked, lowering my voice so they couldn't know I was in. I lived in the dark, so they couldn't see my light.
"Sure, just let me ask." I quickly packed a bag of stuff for the night and climbed out of the window. "Sammy? Yeah, they said fine, just don't bring an argument with you"
"This is why I'm climbing out of the window. The stairs creek and they said if I sneak out again, I'm homeless. See you in 10" I hung up and jumped the last few feet. I parked my little blue bug around the corner from the house so they wouldn't hear me leave and also they wouldn't let me park Sky on the driveway.
I got in and turned the engine on. My stereo started playing Linkin Park so I sang along as I drove to Aria's. 'Turn the mike up louder I got to say something, light weights step to the side when we come in, feel it in your chest the syllables get pumping, people in the street they panic and start running'. Hands Held High, one of their best.
I knocked on the door of the Rosser house and Aria's mom answered. "Hello, Samantha, dear. Arianna's upstairs" she smiled, moving aside so that I could come in.
