Chapter 24: Preparing for War

Episode 9:

Since I was shot, the doctor at Hilltop and Carl helped me get into a boot. He even helped me walk again as we went inside to talk to Gregory about fighting the Saviors. However, he wasn't budging and was really starting to make me mad.

"You know what Gregory? Shut up. I got shot in the leg and still managed to stand up to Negan. I showed him that I'm not afraid of him, working for him or not. So if one person can do that, who's to say our communities combined can't?" I asked.

"Well, little lady, that's just dandy. But I'm still not agreeing," Gregory answered.

After a while, we finally left the room.

"Man, if it weren't for this boot, I would beat him to a bloody pulp," I grumbled.

Carl chuckled and said, "I would love to see that."

"But what are we going to do? Gregory won't listen and we're still outnumbered," I asked.

"I don't know, but we'll figure something out," he answered.

We walked with the rest of the group until Enid came up to us. She brought us outside where some of the people were there. They wanted to fight and we were thrilled for their help. Then Jesus told us about this place called the Kingdom and it was ruled by this guy named Ezekiel. We agreed and we were off.

Once there, we saw how huge it was. People were doing laundry, planting crops, etc., but they didn't look like fighters.

We went to meet with the king himself, but I was taken off guard when I saw he had a pet tiger. We explained our situation and at first, he was mad at Jesus for breaking his vow about something. But then Rick told him about when his mom told him a story about a rock in front of a castle that would cause many problems, until a little girl had the courage to dig it up and bury it. Then she found a bag of gold; hard work should be rewarded.

"You see that girl beside my son?" Rick asked, while pointing at me, then explained, "She is like a daughter to me. She and Morgan were there for me when the world turned into this. She was shot in the leg by one of Negan's people and still had the courage to make a stand. Have you met many people like that? Because I sure haven't."

King Ezekiel was going to lead us around the Kingdom tomorrow. So later that night, I went to Rick's room.

"Hey Rick?" I said.

"Hey. What's going on?" he asked.

"I wanted to thank you for what you said to Ezekiel," I answered.

"Well, it's the truth," he smiled.

"Plus, I almost freaked out being in the same room with the tiger. What you said helped me forget about that," I smiled.

"I was freaking out too. Now get some sleep," Rick told me.

"Okay. Love ya," I said and hugged him.

"Love you too," he replied.

I went to my room and got in the bed with Carl.

The next day, he, Rick, Michonne, Jesus, Tara, and Rosita headed towards Negan's lair; I didn't go since my leg is still healing. I found Enid and went up to her.
