Chapter 12: I Understand

Mike

I can't believe it! I just can't believe she is back. There is no way in hell I am letting her go again. Hopefully now we can get her a bed and she can move into my room and I will move into the basement, just like we planned.
The boys have gone home so Nancy and I are looking after El and Eve. Lucas said he will skip school tomorrow with me so that will be good. I have a feeling that Lucas likes Eve, just the way he looks at her and the way he cares so much about her. I know how he feels.
El is sitting by Eve, holding her hand. Eve saw me looking and smiled at me. El turned to me, smiling as well. She got up and walked over to me wrapping her arms around my waist and burying her face in my chest. "I missed you so much Mike." She looked up at me, tears rolling down her cheeks and I wiped them away. "El I missed you everyday." I wanted to tell her everything, how I feel, what I went through, but, I can't right now, "I never stopped looking for you El." I smiled down at her and she wiped away the tears that were on my face. We were interrupted by Eve coughing. El rushed to her side, "Are you ok?" Eve sat up and nodded "I'm fine." "Are you sure?" I asked, walking over, still feeling terrible guilt. She could see it, "Mike please don't feel bad, I know how much she means to you and I would do anything for her, cause she is my sister." She smiled at me then embraced El in a warm hug. She's right, it doesn't seem like it but I would do anything to protect Nancy and Holly.
Nancy came down and told me it was time for dinner. "I'll bring you guys back some food ok?" They nodded.
I ran up the stairs after Nancy and saw Hopper leaving, he must have dropped off my bike, hopefully he came up with a good excuse.
After dinner Nancy and I snuck some leftovers down to the girls, Eve was trying to teach El new words. "Wow El, your hair has grown so much!" Nancy exclaimed as she handed a plate of food to her. It has, it's just above her shoulders, it's quite curly, I like it. She looks good in anything.

Lucas

After leaving the house in the morning I headed straight for Mike's house. As I was riding down his street I saw a girl with fiery red hair walking towards the school, I haven't seen her before so she must be new. We quickly exchanged glances and continued on our way.
I knocked quietly on the back door to the basement and Eve opened the door. "Oh, ah hey, how are you doing?" I mumbled out awkwardly and she giggled, "A lot better, thanks." She smiled and let me in.
Mike was sitting on the couch beside El who was eating Eggos. "Hey Lucas." Mike waved and I sat down at the table. "Hey guys." El gave me a small wave and continued to scoff down the Eggos. Eve came and sat beside me at the table, we sat there in silence for a few minutes before I thought of something to say. "Hey Eve, how did your powers work yesterday if they have never worked before?" She furrowed her eyebrows and thought about it for a while before she responded, "Well I guess, yesterday there was a real reason to use them, I can't explain it but I felt something strong when I was near the tree, like I could sense El was there. I don't know." She shook her head slightly and looked down. "I guess in the lab I was surrounded by people who weren't friendly or encouraging, that could have impacted the way my powers work. Since I have been with you guys I feel, I don't know loved." She looked up at me and I nodded, I understood what she was saying, "I know it doesn't make sense." She laughed a bit, then looked down again. "No it does." I reassured her, "I understand." She looked at me with wide eyes and smiled warmly. I have never seen a smile more beautiful than hers.
A few hours past and it was coming up on 3:15 pm. The boys said they would meet us here so we could discuss what was going to happen. There was a knock on the door, "That will be them, I'll get it." I said standing up and walking to the door. I opened it to find not only Will and Dustin, but the same girl with the fiery red hair that I saw this morning.
