Chapter 13: Max

It felt weird going to school without Mike and Lucas, especially with El back and Eve. This week has just been chaos! As Will and I headed into class I noticed a new girl. She has icy blue eyes and fiery red hair. I wonder if it it is the girl the doctor was talking about. What was her name again? "Ahh you must be Max?" Mr Clark questioned her as she took a seat beside where I usually sit. She nodded nervously. That's right, I remember now, it was Max.
I sat down beside her, "Welcome to Hawkins." I said and smiled at her, "Thanks." She smiled back and blushed. It felt like no time at all when the bell rang and everyone ran out of class.
At first break Will and I sat at our normal table in the cafeteria, in the back corner. The table was so empty without Mike and Lucas. I grabbed out my lunch and looked around for Max, I don't know why, but I did. After a while I saw her walk in, she looked nervous, she didn't have anyone to sit with.
"I'll be right back." I told Will as I got up, abandoning him and my baloney sandwich, and walked over to her. When she saw me walking toward her she started fidgeting with her hands.
"Hey, I'm Dustin, from Mr Clarks class." I began and smiled at her. "Hey, I'm Max." She smiled and looked down nervously.
"Want to come sit with us?" I asked and her face lit up, she nodded and smiled widely.
I lead her back to the table and Will looked at me with furrowed eyebrows, "Will this is Max, Max, this is Will." I introduced them and they smiled at each other "Nice to meet you." They both said in a friendly tone.
Before long everyone was getting along really well, time flew and the bell rang.
After school the plan was to go straight to Mike's house to see how everything was going. Will and I headed for our bikes, when we saw Max across the street getting out of a car. The slammed the door and flipped off whoever was driving.
"What was that all about?" Will questioned looking at me. "I don't know, let's go see if she is alright." I suggested, Will looked at his watch impatiently but agreed.
We jumped on our bikes and sped after her, when we found her she was sitting in the gutter with her head in her hands, her skateboard sitting beside her. "Hey Max, you alright?" I asked startling her. "Oh my god! Dustin you scared the shit out of me!" She exclaimed, laughing a bit. Will offered her his hand and pulled her up. "What happened?" He asked her in a concerned voice.
"Oh my stupid step brother was just being a complete dick!" She shook her head. Will and I looked at each other, for a quiet girl she swore a lot.
"Hey what are you doing this afternoon?" I asked, "I don't know, probably avoid going home for as long as possible." She replied simply. "Want to come with u-" "Dustin!" Will cut in, "We are going to Mikes house remember?" Told me and gave me a look.
"I'm sure it will be fine with the others." I told him. He looked at Max and smiled, "Ok." He said reluctantly and with that we were on our way to Mike's house.
As we made our way into Maple street, Max told us that this was the street she had moved into. She lived across the road from Mike.
We made our way to the back door and knocked lightly.
Lucas opened the door, "Hey gu-" he stopped suddenly when he saw Max. He looked at Will and I with confused eyes. I have him a reassuring look. "Lucas this is Max, Max, Lucas." He stood there dumbfounded for a second before speaking up "Nice too meet you Max." "Yeah, you too." She replied, giving him a small smile.
Lucas moved out of the way and let us in, Mike stood up from where he was sitting with El. He saw Max and instantly looked at Will and I, he was not happy. "I'll be right back." I informed Max before walking over to Mike.
"Who is that, what is she doing here?" He whispered in an angry tone. "Her name is Max, she is new at school and she is our new friend." I said and gave him a toothless smile which usually makes him laugh. He smiled a bit before shaking his head, "Why did you bring her here?" "She can't go home, I think she is having trouble with her family." I told him.  "Alright then." He said and walked over to Max. Whenever he was having troubles with his family he relied on us. That's one of our rules, to look out for each other.
"Hey Max, I'm Mike, nice too meet you." He smiled and shook her hand, "You too." She smiled back. "This is El and Eve." He gestured to the girls who waved at Max. "Hey." She said and waved back.
"Hey guys." Everyone turned to Will who was standing near the table, leaning on it for support, he was as white as a ghost. "I don't feel too goo-" he fell to the floor with a thud. "Crap!" I ran over to him, "Will!" I shook him slightly, but he was out cold.
