As soon I stepped out of the bathroom and into the cafe, I looked around, and noticed that Wyatt had been telling them the truth: his friends were gone.
And upon looking around the cafe, I also noticed that Wyatt seemed to be gone too.
Fuck.
I looked around a little bit more, just the make sure that he was actually not in the cafe, because if he was just hiding in a dark corner somewhere, watching everyone, I wouldn't want to pull out my iPod to text him and incriminate myself.
Once my search turned up empty, I messaged him.
"Where are you?"
He saw my message within 30 seconds.
"Bathroom. I'm scared."
Alecia: "Why?"
Wyatt: "Because Alecia, I'm scared you won't like what you see."
I sat there and thought about that for a minute. Wyatt didn't actually think Alecia was that kind of a person, did he? Because that was defeating the purpose of what I was trying to do by being the way Alecia was, all kind and talking to everyone who messaged her.
I can't believe he thought she was that kind of person.
But I still wanted to convince him it was okay, and that I wouldn't judge him. Even though I know he was going to forever hate Alecia, I was really hoping he wouldn't dislike Quinn too much.
Alecia: "I don't think you have to worry about that. Just please, come out and talk to me now that your friends are gone."
He didn't respond for a little while. But then he started to type.
Wyatt: "Okay."
My stomach churned as I tried to figure out what to do with myself. I know I only had about 10 seconds to do anything.
So I ran over to the chair I was sitting in before, flopped down in it, and began pretend reading my book again.
5 seconds later, Wyatt came out of the bathroom.
He stopped and looked around, a new look in his eyes.
Hope. His eyes were filled with hope.
And knowing that I was about to crush that hope was pretty gut wrenching.
But this wasn't about me or my feelings. This needed to be done.
And now.
So I put my book down and look over at him.
He was looking in the opposite direction of where I was sitting, which was good for me, I guess.
I stood up.
"Wyatt," I called.
His head turned instantly.
His eyes focused on me for, like, a nanosecond before searching every other place in the room.
Oh geez.
"Wyatt," I called again.
And again, his head turned.
But this time, his eyes definitely landed on me.
I walked over to where he was standing and stood right in front of him.
He looked at me the whole time, the expression in his eyes changing as I neared.
The first emotion in his eyes was definitely confusion. Probably what anyone would initially think in any situation when a random person you don't know yells your name.
Even though I knew what was going on in the back of his mind, I know he was thinking the truth.
The next few emotions blazed through his eyes in the matter of a few seconds.
Fear
Horror
And then confusion again
And then relief
And now the emotion in his eyes, while I was standing there in front of him, was definitely clear.
Hurt.
Wyatt was hurt.
Which I guess I was expecting, but you never really know how your gonna feel or react until your in that situation.
We stood staring at each other until part of the group of girls I had used as a human shield brushed past us to get to the bathroom.
I looked behind me at the door closing, and then I looked back at him.
His eyes were blinking and he was rubbing his face, almost like he was trying to rub away the horror he was feeling.
I touched his shoulder gently, and he jumped back.
I instantly felt bad. "A walk?" I asked.
At first, it looked like he would say no, but then he seemed to change his mind, and nodded.
"Okay."
The day outside was literally perfect. And I don't mean this in the way that everybody else would when imagining a perfect day. There was no sunshine, and it wasn't warm out anymore.
Instead, it was cloudy as all hell and it was about to rain.
I love rain.
I also felt like the weather change was so appropriate for the events that had occurred over the last few minutes.
We walked in silence for a few blocks, thankfully there were zero other people out on the sidewalks right now.
But I couldn't take it anymore and I turned to him and stopped.
"I'm sorry."
He shook his head.
"Listen, it's really all my fault. I knew this was all too good to be true. I knew it was a mistake to trust you."
Those word stabbed me in the chest like daggers and I legitimately didn't know what to say.
And that's pretty scary, considering I always know what to say.
All the things I had planned to say to him, everything I had recited in my brain over and over and I fell asleep last night, everything, EVERYTHING
was gone.
He shook his head again.
And then I saw a tear roll down his cheek.
Goose bumps rose on my arms and back, and I felt sick.
He shook his head for the third time.
And walked away.
And as the rain started to fall, I couldn't tell the difference between my tears and the drops failing from the sky.
But I didn't go after him,
And I don't know why.
