Chapter 15

We had all come together to support Caroline in her difficult time of having to say goodbye to her mother, but to be honest... she didn't seem to be affected at all, she was her usual controlling self.

"Don't you think it's strange?" Elena asked as Damon explained her behavior the previous morning.

"Her mother died, no one handles it the same" Damon said.

"I mean she's allowed to be sad, but she really doesn't show it all that much... does she know she's allowed to be sad?" I ask, worrying for my friend.

"It's Caroline, she is always the one that takes care of things and handles things, even when we were growing up... but I've never seen her like this" Elena says looking just as worried.

"I guess we're just going to roll with the punches today, and take it as it comes?" I assume and they all agree. Elena leaned onto me for comfort, with Caroline hurting from her mom and Bonnie still stuck in the prison world... we knew we needed to be there for each other. "We'll get through this, like we always do" I say to her and I know she appreciates it. Even when we haven't always seen eye to eye, we came through when it mattered.

We met up with Caroline in the living room which is where she handed us all jobs to get done today so we could have a beautifully organized ceremony for her mother. I noticed Matt was staring at me, but I tried to pretend not to notice. We had barely spoken to one another since I confessed my love for him... there was no way he was more mortified than I was, so I was leaving it up to him to make the first move. I was a little relieved when I didn't have a job to get done with him and instead I could go with Damon. I wanted to know how Matt felt but I also wanted him to be as sure as I was... so I planned to wait it out.

My phone started ringing and I was very confused when I looked at the screen and seen Kai's name across it. I debated on answering but than realized it could be important.

"Hello?" I answer with question.

"I need help" His tired voice barely comes across from the other end, his voice is scratchy and his breathing is heavy.

"Kai? What's wrong with you?" I ask him, somewhat concerned.

"I don't know, but something is definitely wrong. I need help... " He says but he's quickly coughing and gasping for air.

"Where are you?" I ask him, feeling bad knowing he probably had no one.

Twenty minutes later I drove beside Kai, who was practically passed out outside Ric and Jo's apartment. I quickly got out to help him to his feet.

"You look awful" I say helping him stand, he was actually putting most of his weight on me.

"I feel like I'm dying, it must be.... From the merge" He says drained of all energy. "I need, to see Jo" He gasps.

"Why did you call me?" I ask instinctively.

"because... you're the only one I thought would come... plus I need help getting up the stairs" he adds embarrassed. It was strange, the pity I felt for Kai. He was a terrible person... but a part of me viewed him and very lonely and in need of a friend. I got Kai up to Rics apartment and I knew it would take a little more convincing and a good explanation as to why I was with Kai in the first place. I was right, because as soon as the door opened and Ric saw Kai, he went to slam the door on his face.

"Ric, please... look at him" I ask trying to be caring.

"You mean the psychopath that tried to kill my wife, his own sister?" Ric retorted.
