Chapter 11: Cleon's POV
There was one thing I hated more than anything: children of Hecate. I don't want to talk about it right now. It's too painful. Anyways, I kind of -- well-- slept the first decade of my life, so you could say my brain is the equivalent of a three-year old, but that's not it. My dad, the god Morpheus, taught me lessons of fighting, math, and other things while I dreamed. Some people don't like me because my father played a big role in the Titan War. Grover especially doesn't seem too fond of me.
"Yo Cleon!" Adam called.
"Yeah?"
"Your shift is here. Come and change places with me," he replied. I walked over and sat on the stool, watching for any invaders. "I'm going to bed," he said tired. I nodded. My shift was at 10:00 at night. I rubbed my eyes.
After about an hour or so, I heard a strange sound. I heard snakes hissing. A giant monster landed on the main deck. She had brass hands, sharp fangs, and hair of living, venomous snakes.
"I am here to destroy this ship!" she said. Then she screamed. I could feel my soul drifting away from my body. No doubt I was already dying. I wanted to flee, but I didn't. I could overpower this monster. You know when a toddler throws a tantrum and screams? After that, they usually get very tired. This monster I knew I could beat.
"I am Euryale, second eldest of the three gorgons!" she blasted. "I am the daughter of Phorcys and Keto! I am here to avenge my mother!" I slowly walked up to her. I wanted to jump off the railing at least to end my possibilities of dying from a gorgon. Obviously, I didn't. I touched her on the leg. She swung to strike me, but I defended myself with my sword Makhaira, a gift from my dad.
"What are you doing, stupid half-blood? You want me to kill you this easily? I wanted to have more fun!" she said. She screamed once more, but I focused. My hand's warmth made her get very sleepy. She yawned. I got a full blast of her awful breath. I released my hand from her leg.
"You are going to go to sleep. Look, your eyelids are already closing," I said softly. She collapsed which made the boat rock. I stabbed Euryale with my sword, and she crumpled to dust. All that was left were two identical vials. Earth was the first to arise from the lower level.
"What happened?" she asked with her eyes wide. She saw the monster dust. "You killed a monster?"
"Yes. Apparently, Keto sent one of her daughters to destroy the ship for revenge. I made her go to sleep, and then I killed her. It was as simple as that," I replied.
"Simple? Wait..." she looked at the vials. Her eyes grew wide once more. "You killed a gorgon? Good grief! Go get those vials, boy! They will be very helpful!"
"Why?" I asked, puzzled.
"On the left side of the gorgon it is poison, but on the right, it could heal anything! Apollo kids know all about this stuff," Earth explained.
After explaining to everyone about what happened, Destania went to the kitchen and stored the gorgon's blood in the cabinet.
"Our first souvenir," Xenia said.
"Bought the hard way," I added. I got a snack and went to bed when my shift was over. The soft mattress felt as good as ever. I had pleasant dreams that night. I think Morpheus was proud of me.
