Chapter 30 - Please

Moonlight shone in through the window, drawing attention to the vacant room Venus no longer resided in. Never again would I see her passing her window late at night or early in the day. No more chances to have window conversations. No more familiarity next door. All that window would ever be was a reminded of what Venus lost.

The only comforting thing about that window anymore was that it reminded me that Venus now resided across the hall. Her being there meant that she was safe. She no longer was forced to reside in a house with a father who despised her and her way of living. Now, she was in a house with people who would only love and respect her.

A slow shriek creaked from the door as it opened, and Venus poked her head inside. Reaching over to the lamp on my bedside table, I flicked it on and squinted as I rolled to face her.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

I was up, I told her as I sat up. What’s wrong?

“I couldn’t sleep,” she sighed, leaning against the doorframe. She glanced up at the picture wall bordering my window and stared in awe. “It’s beautiful.”

I took them myself.

“I can tell. You’re amazing at it.”

Flipping back the duvet on the vacant side of my bed, I patted the spot next to me. As Venus walked towards the bed, she tripped and fell. Her head popped up from the floor, and she held up my guitar case. “I forgot you played. I don’t think I’ve ever heard you.”

It’s not something I play that often.

“I always wanted to learn how to play, but music was kind of forbidden back home.”

I can teach you, I shrugged.

“Really?”

Hand it to me, please.

Venus handed me the guitar, and she sat down beside me on the bed. I had her sit on my lap as I held my hand over the neck to switch chords, and Venus strung along. I only taught her for five minutes before she was laying her head in my lap, listening to me play Those Magic Changes from Grease.

Venus’s breathing slowed and steadied, and I tried to shift as little as possible as I leaned my guitar against the side of my bed. I pulled the covers up with me as I laid down and shifted Venus’s head to lay on my chest. Gently, I ran my fingers through my hair, and she stirred.

“You treat me so well,” she mumbled, and I kissed the top of her head. “I love you so damn much.”

I love you, too, I mouthed, but she couldn’t see me.

Venus shifted her head to rest in the crook of my neck, and each of her exhales gently tickled. “I promise next time to the big spoon. I love holding you…but just this once, I need you to hold me. Please.”
