Lexi’s POV.

I awoke with a start. I was breathing heavily, as if I’d been running, and could have sworn I felt a stitch in my tummy.

I sat up as the stitch feeling grew more noticeable, flicking my eyes over to where the wall clock was lit up with 3:12am.

Oh yes, that’s right- I could remember now. I’d only gone to bed about three hours ago, just after New Year.

Louis and I hadn’t gone to this party our families had gone to- we’d instead stayed at mine and done some things that I just can’t repeat.

I looked to my left- sure enough there he was, a vision of-

My thoughts were jolted out of my head as a sudden stabbing feeling grasped my whole body- starting from my belly, and spreading all the way round to my back.

“Louis.” I groaned, my hand scrabbling in the bedding trying to find him.

“LOUIS.” I half cried, as I hunched over, the pain blinding me for a second.

I felt Louis’ hand grab mine tightly, and his nose brush mine as he put his face close to mine. “Lexi, what’s wrong?” he asked, his voice half full of sleep still.

I shook my head, unable to get the words out, as the pain slowly started to fade.

As I opened my eyes, I saw Louis’ hand slip down to my pajama pants. “Babe, I don’t think now’s quite the time-“

“Your waters have broken.” He stated, his eyes staring straight into mine.

“What?” I asked, my voice barely above whisper level.

Louis’ eyes grew wide, wider than I’d ever seen them before.

“But I’m only 8 months?” I squeaked out.

I felt a spasm in my bump again, and little Edward kicked, quite hard as it was visible through my tight vest.

I pulled myself up and off the bed, leaving Louis frozen stiff. Waddling carefully, I made my way over to my closet, where I had a bag full of overnight stuff for whenever I stayed at Louis’ place.

“Louis… Louis!” I said, snapping my fingers behind his ear. He jumped, and sprung from the bed.

“Oh my god Lexi, oh my god. Look, you just sit down, I’ll get your mum, just relax, and I’ll be back in a moment.” He garbled out, pushing me gently back to the bed and forcing me to sit down.

I raised my eyebrows as he rushed from the room, nearly falling over the bag I’d put by the door with my washing in. He wasn’t kidding though, within moments he was back in the room with my mum hot on his heels.

“Oh darling, are you ok?” She asked, dropping to her knees in front of me. I shrugged- honestly I had no idea if I was fine or going to die.

Louis, on the other hand, was freaking out.

“So I’ve got this bag, if you could get the car seat Hannah, I’ll call my mum and we’ll be at the hospital in say 15 minutes ok let’s go.” He said, all in one breath.

Mum and I looked at each other, both of us trying so hard not to laugh. “Louis.” I said calmly, reaching my hand out to him. He dropped my bag and took it, falling to a sitting position on my bed next to me.

“Calm down babe. It’s only been probably about an hour or so since it started, and there’s probably going to be another few before anything happens. Look at me.” I said, cupping his chin with my hand and tilting it so he was looking at me.

“I’m probably the calmest in the room, and yet all this is happening to me. Breathe for me, and calm.” I said gently, kissing his lips.

He smiled slightly, and nodded. “Ok. Calm. Got it.”

In that instant, my belly burst into humongous amounts of pain. I hunched over slightly, and groaned. Grabbing Louis’ hand, I squeezed it tightly, and clenched my eyes shut. I probably sounded like a dying whale to Jo, who was on the phone to my mum.

“Jo’s coming, she’s got the neighbor to babysit the girls. She told me to get you into something comfortable, and lay out towels and those absorbent sheets we got on your bed.” Mum said, typing on her phone quickly as she spoke.

“I’ll get her changed.” Louis voice sounded distant as the pain kept coming, wave after wave after wave. “Here baby. It’ll be alright.”

I jumped a little as his voice came to my ear, but the pain was receding. I nodded, blowing out a breath slowly. “Why on earth did you think we had to go to the hospital Lou?” I asked, a shaky laugh escaping my lips as mum left the room on the phone to the midwife.  Louis shrugged, his face still looking concerned, as he pulled my top off and replaced it with one of his baggy ones.

“I panicked, I guess.” He said, chuckling slightly as he kissed my forehead. I smiled, shaking my head at him.

I helped him slide my pajama bottoms off and my knickers, before lying down on my right side, as after lying down on my left I discovered it brought on more painful contractions.

Soon my mum was back in the room, and Jo was here too. I was moved for a minute so mum and Jo could lie the towels and absorbent sheets on the bed, which happened to be when I had the worst contraction yet.

The room looked quite a scene when the midwife arrived- Jo and mum trying to put the towels out as quickly as they could, Louis holding me upright while I half squatted with all my weight on him.

She checked me immediately, as soon as I was lying down on the bed, and told us I was only 2cm dilated. Louis gently placed a towel over my legs and bottom, before lying down opposite me on the double bed.

Jo made my mum go back to bed for another hour or so, as it was going to be a while until anything more happened.

The last thing I remember before I fell into a doze was Louis’ eyes and his soft, beautiful voice singing me to sleep.
