Lexi’s POV.

I’ve been hiding in my room all evening, dreading the moment when my dad would return. Mum was even more anxious- I’d left her sitting at the living room coffee table, cold tea in her hand.

I felt bad for her. She’d take the hit after me, she always did. He didn’t give two shits about us- the only reason he stayed was- actually, I don’t know. But he stayed.

I wish he didn’t.

Just then, the doorbell rang, it’s shrill breaking the silence in the house. I heard the squeaky floorboard next to the stairs, and I knew mum had gone to answer the door. I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the explosion of yelling and beating, but instead, heard my mum call up to me.

“Lexi? He’s here again.” She called, confusion clear in her voice. I frowned, wondering who she meant. Obviously she meant Louis, but he seemed to be two different people. My bedroom door creaked open, and I felt a weight join mine on the bed. A soothing hand was put on the small of my back, and I braved a look.

“Louis?” I asked, unsure of which at first, as he was wearing square sunglasses and a beanie.

“It’s alright love.” He soothed, and straight away I knew it was the nicer, not a dick Louis.  I shifted my body so I was entirely facing him, and he pulled off his sunglasses and beanie. I noted to myself his hair was no longer dyed red, but the usual brown. “Hey.” He said, smiling softly as his thumb wiped away a stray tear that had escaped. I turned away too look out the window, and bit my lip.

I had to ask.

“Louis, what’s going on. You shouldn’t be here, you should be with Gemma? Especially after you ratted me out today.” I spat out the last bit, still furious about the incident. Louis shrugged. “Gemma? Oh, right… I thought you’d be in need of me more than she is right now.” He said, a small smirk, not unkind, appeared on his face. I frowned, and crossed my arms. “I’m not having sex with you.” I said sternly. He looked at me surprised, before bursting out laughing. “What? Oh Lexi, seriously, you’re funny.” He said in between laughs. I raised my eyebrows, and opened my mouth to say something- but was cut off by the front door shutting and my dad yelling out that he was home.

I froze, my eyes wide with fear, and Louis’ expression hardened. “That’s him, isn’t it.” He stated calmly, but I wasn’t fooled. There was a tightness in the way he said it that gave him away. I didn’t say anything, just nodded, as dad called up to me.

“Lexi! Downstairs, now!” He roared, and I know for a fact my face blanched. Slowly, I shakily stood, and made my way to the door. “You should go.” I whispered, not looking at him as I opened the door.

Moments later, I felt a hand in my own, and looked up to see Louis’ earnest face. “I can’t let you face him alone.” He said, and gave my hand a gentle squeeze. My eyebrows furrowed in a frown, but didn’t say anything. I knew dad would force him to leave anyway.

Once I stood in the doorway to the living room, I quietly cleared my throat. Dad spun on his heal to look at me, his eyes livid, but showed surprise when he saw Louis with his hand in mine.

“Good evening sir.” He said quietly, his grip tightening ever so slightly around my hand. My dad just looked at him, his mouth slightly dropped. “And who might you be, lad?” He asked, clearly faking interest and politeness. “Louis Tomlinson, sir.” Louis said, putting unnecessary emphasis on ‘sir’.

Dad’s neck muscles strained ever so slightly, which I knew from the past meant he was getting impatient. I glanced urgently over at mum, to try and figure out if she’d already told him, but from the sad look in her eyes, I knew I was in deep, deep shit.

“Well, Louis Tomlinson,” Dad said through gritted teeth. “Maybe it’s best if you leave now. See, Lexi here hasn’t been exactly behaving herself at school, and her mother and I need to talk to her about this.” He said, his voice barely level. He reached out to grab my arm, but I unintentionally shrank back into Louis’ shadow.

“Now now, Lexi,” Dad said, tugging at the left side of his shirt collar as he got nervous. I guessed Louis’ presence was stopping him from lashing out like he usually did. Louis however, didn’t move, other than to tighten his grip on my hand even more. “Excuse me, sir, but Lexi and I were about to go out.” He said, his voice now dripping in sarcasm. Dad’s eyes narrowed, but beads of sweat still formed at his receding hairline. “Son, now, I don’t think now’s the time-”

“We were about to go out. I’m sure the, ahem, ‘talk’ could take place afterwards?” He interrupted, moving forwards so he stood taller than my dad, who shrank back, almost as if he was afraid of him. He sighed, and nodded, before turning away from Louis and placing himself sloppily on the armchair.

Louis smiled triumphantly, and turned away to lead me out the front door. But while I let him lead me away, my thoughts remained where I’d just been standing.

When my dad had sighed, his breath had come my way.

And his breath reeked of alcohol.

My mum was in trouble now.
