Candice's POV

As soon as the bell rang, Niall and I checked our schedules.

"I have English." I said.

"Oh! I have Biology." He said.

"Okay! I'll see you later then." I said, forcing a smile on my face.

"Wait a minute. Can you please show me where the Biology class is?"

"Sure. Come with me." I said.

He followed me and we walked through the corridor where I could feel some eyes on me, which I tried to ignore. We finally reached the Biology class.

"Here it is." I pointed out.

"Thank you so much Candice." He flashed a smile.

"You're welcome. Have a good day." I replied.

"You too."

"Sure." I said and started walking towards my class. I was pondering upon a few things when I bumped into someone. I was brought to senses by a high pitched voice.

I looked up to see who it was and my eyes met the ones I wish I'd never cross paths with.

"Watch where you walk, you loser." She shouted.

She said it so loud that it caught the attention of the people in the corridor, who had now started looking at me. I felt my  cheeks burn because I was so embarrassed, or should I say, scared.

"I-I I'm sorry Veronica." I managed to get the words out of my mouth.

"You better be, loser!! Now get off my way and get your ugly face out of here!" She yelled at me again.

I stepped aside and I could feel the tears well up in my eyes, so I rushed to the girls' washroom. I was relieved that it was empty. I cried my heart out and tried to calm my nerves after what had just happened.

In time I realised that I was getting late for my class. I picked my books and walked towards my class as fast as my legs allowed.

Thankfully, it was English, which was taken by Mr. Williams. He let me in, and once again I chose the last bench to avoid the attention.

I was present there physically, but my mind was elsewhere. A few minutes later, Mr. Williams said -

"Miss Payne. Do you bother to pay attention in the class please?"

"S-Sorry Mr. Williams. Won't happen again." I said. I could hear a few people giggling and making fun of me.

It was then, that the same curly-haired boy walked in, late again, but Mr. Williams let him in. God knows what's with him being always late.

Unfortunately, he chose to sit next to me. I wanted to ignore all kind of attention but to my bad luck, he himself chose to come and sit next to me.

I avoided him for a little while until he decided to start up a conversation with me.

"Hey! I'm Harry. And you are?" He asked with a smile on his face.

I looked down, so that my hair could cover my face. I quickly wiped my tears and looked up again.

"H- Hi. I'm Candice." I spoke but my voice cracked.

"That's a beautiful name." He complimented me.

"Thank you." I managed to say.

"So, tell me something about you?" Harry said.

"I'm sorry, but I'm not --

"Miss Payne. If you cannot stay quiet and pay attention, it's better for you to leave the class." Mr. Williams pointed out, before I  could complete my sentence.

I felt my cheeks getting red due to embarrassment, but I stood up and walked out of the classroom.

In a way, I felt relieved that I no longer have to hold the lump in my throat which was getting bigger and bigger, every passing moment.

I walked towards the playground, which was luckily empty. I sat there, letting the tears flow down my cheeks.

It was the first day of high school and I was hating it already. A few minutes later, the bell rang, which meant the class was over.

I quickly wiped my tears and pretended to study.

A few seconds later, I saw Harry walking towards me but I avoided any eye contact that could open the doors for conversation.

Believe it or not, I hated making conversations. It's so hard to let someone in when all you want to do is go home, be in your bed and do nothing but exist.

But I guess the world doesn't work that way, and maybe that's why I was getting this unwanted attention from people today. With so much going inside my head, I saw Harry's lean body hover over me when he initiated the conversation.

"Hey Candice! I'm sorry. Because of me --

"It's okay. Don't apologise." I looked up and spoke but my voice was giving up.

"Oh My God. Were you crying?"

"I-I..

Before I could finish, Veronica cut me off.

"Hey Harry! I'm Veronica, the head cheer leader of the school. We definitely should be friends and I'm sure you don't wanna befriend ugly losers." She glared at me.

"Congratulations on being the head cheer leader of the school and thank you so much for your concern and the thoughtful advice about my social circle Veronica, but I think I'm wise enough to choose my own friends." He replied sarcastically.

She shot me weird and angry glances and stormed off.

"Back to the point. Were you crying?" He asked me again.

"N-No.. "

"Candice, you should give up on lying when you know that your eyes do not complement your lie. I'm really sorry, you had to face that because of me. I did not intend to get you punished." He said, trying to comfort me.

"Of course you didn't intend to get me punished Harry. Which means it wasn't your fault. So you can stop apologizing. I wasn't crying over that."

"Then why were you crying?"

"Erm.. I- I..

"Hey Candice!" Niall luckily interrupted the conversation I wanted to avoid desperately.

"I was looking for you everywhere.. Oh! Hey mate! I'm Niall." He continued.

"Hey! I'm Harry." He introduced himself with a warm hand shake.

"Candice, I was wondering if you could join me for a coffee after school?" Harry said.

"I don't think..

"Please? Consider it my way of apologizing for whatever happened earlier?" He cut me off.

"Uh.. Okay"

"Great! I'll see you after school then." He smiled and walked off.

Me and Niall discussed about the class and walked off for Chemistry together.

The rest of the day at school passed by, without any unusual incident taking place, which I was thankful about.

The final bell rang which indicated the school was finally over.

I picked my books and was ready to head home when I saw Harry waiting for me outside my class..
