I Won't Lose Her, Too...

Sarah walked off of the bus and towards her house. There was still a Thomas the Tank Engine-sized hole in Cassie's room. It reminded her on why Cassie had been sleeping with Sarah lately. Their mom doesn't trust Cassie being alone at night anymore.

Sarah opened the half-broken door and into the living room... if you could call it a living room. Basically, it was just a couple of wooden chairs since those were the only things to survive the battle and a fireplace that didn't work anymore.

Nobody was home; Sarah's mom was at her part-time job and Cassie was at her stepfather's house. Sarah was alone. She wasn't even supposed to be there, anyway. It was under construction. But, Sarah memorized the days the workers came to the house, so she came every three days.

She walked up to her room and set her backpack down onto her bed. Her bed and her mirror were the only things that stayed perfectly fine after the battle. She unzipped her bag and took out the suit. Sarah held it up to the mirror on herself. It looked like the right size, and the suit was very light weight.

Sarah put it on. It was easy to move in, but there were multiple buttons on it, so it was a little bit confusing. She took the helmet that came along with it and put it on. It was a little loose, but there was a chin strap to tighten it. Sarah looked back up into the mirror. She saw her dad. Her dad in that suit.

She crumpled down into the corner of the bed, threw the helmet at the mirror and bawled her eyes out. The mirror shattered. She couldn't stand thinking of that day. She could have saved him with the suit. Maybe she could have figured out how to use it with the help of her dad and help him defeat Cross.

After a bit of crying, she looked at her watch that was laying on the bed. She had to be home in ten minutes if she wanted to not get caught staying there by the workers. She took the suit off, put her regular clothes back on, and left the house in silence as she ran home to all the family she has left.

She opened the front door. She had made it home early... but so did her mom. She was pacing back and forth across the dining room floor. When Sarah closed the door, her mom jumped. She looked at Sarah and gave her a tight hug. Sarah hugged her mom back and asked, "Is everything alright? You look... tense."

Her mom's eyes were red and puffy. "Have you seen Cassie this afternoon?" Sarah shook her head. Her mom sat down on the living room couch and slammed her fist onto the table. She put her hands on top of her head. "I got a call from the school today saying she went outside for recess and never came back."

Sarah almost collapsed. Cassie's missing?! "I'll be right back, Mom. I have to go out and--"

"NO!" Sarah stopped, frozen with fear. Her mom's eyes were huge and crazy. She saw she had frightened Sarah and took a deep breath. "I-I'm sorry, Sarah, but I don't want to lose you, too. Your father is already..." She couldn't continue that thought. "I just want you to be safe."

Sarah went over and hugged her mom again. "Don't worry, mom. I'm just going to go to the school. I'll stay inside the whole time and have an adult with me if that's what you would like."

Her mom sighed. "If any adult is free, tell them you need an adult beside you. If not, just... don't go out to that playground. And come back before dark!"

Sarah smiled. "I will. I promise." She grabbed her computer and opened her backpack to put it in. She was staring right at the suit. Should I bring it? She decided. She closed her backpack up and carried her laptop since there wasn't enough room for that and the suit. She left the house and started running to the school.
