Everyone sat in silence in the back of an armored car, their hands cuffed behind their backs. Sarah sat next to Cassie, allowing Cassie to sleep on her shoulder. Sarah stared at her stepfather with a glare. "Why did you help him?" Sarah asked.
Her stepfather blinked in surprise of the question. "What?"
"Why did you help Darron?"
"I don't know what you mean..."
"You had to be the one who broke into Hank and Hope's house," Sarah gestured towards them, "You told everyone else that you were with the rest of the police."
"No, I did not help Darron. Why on earth would I help the guy who kidnapped my stepdaughter?!"
While that made sense to Sarah, she couldn't be too sure. She followed up with, "Then why did I see you that night? There was no way it was anyone else but you."
Her stepfather glanced at her, then at his wife. He sighed before saying, "Your mother and I ran into Darron a day or two after Cassie went missing. He said that he knew where Cassie was and that we needed to follow his instructions in order to get her back."
Sarah's mom jutted in. "We were desperate, just as you were. We didn't realize who he was."
"We weren't there that night when you were," her stepfather added, "we didn't know that Darron was the one in Cassie's room then. So, we listened to him. He needed someone to scope out Hank and Hope's house so he could plant trackers and cameras. He said that Hank and Hope had Cassie, that they were not telling us that they were using her for an experiment. We couldn't let that happen."
"Yes," her mother stated, "your stepfather was in the house that night. He called the police beforehand, told them that he was looking into a possible crime reported in. He went to Hope and Hank's house and began placing cameras. Then, you called his name on the way up the stairs. And I..." She sighed, not wanting to admit the next sentence. "I hit you over the head with a vase."
Sarah's breaths became quicker. These were not her parents. They would never do something so horrible and terrible to their own daughter/stepdaughter. No sane family would do it, right?!
Her mother continued, "Darron was telling me what to do through an earpiece. I didn't realize it was you until it was too late to stop swinging. Your stepfather called the police shortly after for backup. We didn't want you involved in this, honey." She reached out to touch Sarah's hand in comfort, but Sarah pulled away. Tears built up in her eyes, not just because her mother had knocked her out, but because of the fact that her mom and stepfather became so desperate that they would believe a crazy man without a second to think about it. All they thought about was getting their daughter back.
Sarah looked down at the sleeping Cassie, watching her perfectly-even breathing tempo. She was calm now, an emotional state Sarah hadn't seen in Cassie in a while. There was always something Cassie was worried about, but not now. This was her time to block out any horrible events that occurred the past week. Sarah just wished she could do the same.
The armored car abruptly stopped, causing everyone to shift which led to Cassie groggily waking up. The doors flew open, flooding the compartment with bright light. Everyone shielded their eyes as they were hurriedly escorted out of the car. Sarah got pushed up to the front of the pack and ended up standing directly in front of Darron. The sun was so bright behind Darron that she could only make out his silhouette.
"Take her in the house," Darron said staring directly into Sarah's eyes, "No funny business. You know exactly what will happen if you do."
Sarah glared before being dragged away from her family and friends. The body guards dragged her all the way to the downstairs bathroom. They tossed her into there along with her suit.
