Chapter 27- The Threat

I sat on Matts lap outside on the pack house porch watching a group of pack children running around playing tag. They were laughing even as some of them were shoved to the ground and bumping into trees and each other. There were many scrapped elbows and knees in this game and I knew that the pack mothers would be having a stern talking to with the children upon seeing them when they went inside.

"Hmm, I wonder what things will be like when we have kids?" Matt's voice sent a tingle down my spine, as minty breath fanned my cheek.

"I imagine they'd still be pretty much the same with just a little more excitement." I laughed.

"I would think of the opposite, I mean our lives have been pretty eventful these past few months. I'm pretty sure children would be a piece of cake after all we've been through." Matt chuckled, resting his head on my shoulder.

"Well if you asked my mother she'd probably laugh at you..." My voice drifted away thinking about my parents. I didn't know if they were dead or not, but it's been a little over a month and Matt and I weren't closer to figuring out how to find any of our pack members or Adam. It was annoyingly stressful, but all we could do was wait and hope.

Standing from Matt's lap, I turned to face him and reached out for him. He shook his head at me, talking my hand, standing from the tan chair and following me down the pristine white porch steps. The children didn't stop their game for a moment as Matt and I squeezed around them, attempting to not get hit. It was quite a mission, but we made it through the group of children as their mothers stepped outside, a look of shock covering their features.

I giggled and led Matt toward the forest pathway and away from the soon to be furious display of parental discipline. As the light green grass replaced the hard cobblestone walkway, I let out a sigh and looked around the beautiful scene in front of me. Animals pranced passed Matt and I, varying from birds to innocent eyed deer. None of the animals took a second look at Matt and I as their ears twitched in come type of worry, before they went running.

I looked around the tree filled forest, trying to figure out what could have caused such a fright in the animals. Matt gripped my hand tightly in his, before creeping forward toward a nearby opening in the forest. I could hear the sound of nearby wolves and knew the Alpha was on his way. Taking a deep breath, ice filled my veins at the faint scent of Adam.

I pushed myself to Matts side, refusing to be a weak beta female and followed mates scent to a small bush which held a baby bird. The bird had a broken wing, but carried a small letter on its back. I picked up the bird tentatively and slowly pulled out the letter, placing it in my pocket, before lightly touching the injured birds wing. The bird was a light shade of green that turned into a deep blue at the tail, a light white on its forehead.

"We need to help it," I said, looking up at Matt.

"Whatever you want, the wing seems to only need bandaging for a few days, but after that she should be all healed. Though I would suggest we keep it for at least a week to be sure." Matt said, looking at the creature in my hand.

"Alright, we should-" I didn't have time to finish that sentence as the Alpha appeared from behind the trees a look of alertness on his face. I pet the frightened birds head, as it attempted to fly away in fear only causing it to flail around hopelessly.

"Who was on my land?" He asked dangerously calm.

"It seems that Matt's brother made it past your defenses. He left this wounded bird and a letter for me..." I explained, knowing this tone very well from my own superiors in my old pack.

"What does this letter say?"

"I haven't read it yet," I sighed, placed the bird in Matts open palm, before pulling the letter out of my back pocket and scanning over the words.

'Dear Samantha,

I know this month without me must have been hard, but I'd like you to know that I've found you and will be bringing you back to me soon enough. I hope your last few hours, days, weeks, maybe even months left with my brother will be enough, before I kill him.

All my love, Adam

P.S. Tell Alpha Silver Lake to take care of the pretty mate of his, I do know how close of friends you two have become and would wish to not take you from her.'

"We need to get back to the pack house... Now." I said angrily, shoving the note in Alpha Silver Lakes hands.
