Jo
We stood and all piled out of the motor home. Our people spread out, forming a loose circle around the motor home. The fenced in community was at the top of a large hill. We could see nothing of what was behind the fence, but the area surrounding it was wide open fields. The trees were too far away for any kind of trap to be sprung from them. It made for an ideal defensive position for this community as well.
Jesus wisely gave us all a minute to take in our surroundings. I glanced from Abraham to Rick to Daryl. They were all tense and had their guns out. When I met Daryl's gaze he glanced meaningfully at the holster under my arm. Rolling my eyes I drew my hand gun and followed Jesus up the hill.
We were fifty feet from the gate when an angry voice was heard. "Stop right there!" a man yelled from atop the fence. Every one of us tensed.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Jesus said whirling around to put himself between the two groups.
"You gonna make us?" Daryl snarled, his rifle pointing at the man's head.
"It's fine," Jesus said in a soothing voice. "Open the gates Cal. Freddie's hurt." Jesus turned back to us. "Look, sorry about these guys, they get antsy standing up there all day doing nothing," Jesus's words had taken an unkind edge and it made me wonder if there wasn't some kind of tension between him and the supposed guards of this place. It had surprised me that Jesus had been out on his own, but now, staring up at two clearly able bodied men it made me think there was something more going on here. Either one of those men looked like they would have been able to be back up for Jesus.
"They give up the weapons, then we'll open the gates." the man snarled again the tension rising.
"Why don't you come down here and get 'em?" Daryl challenged. I exhaled. Most days Daryl was exactly what we needed in any situation, but today, he was causing more problems than he was solving.
I met Jesus's gaze and let him see how sorry I was for Daryl's outburst. The corner of his mouth twisted in a small smile and he nodded before turning back to the stand off.
"Gentlemen," the doctor called stepping forward. "Look, we vouch for these people. They saved us out there."
"Lower the spears," Jesus snapped once more and the men listened.
Rick stepped up next to Jesus shaking his head. "Look, I'm not taking any chances. Tell your guy Gregory to come out here."
"No," Jesus snapped, standing up to Rick firmly for maybe the first time. "Don't you see what just happened?" Jesus asked in disbelief.
I stepped forward putting my shoulder between the aggressive Rick and Jesus, but I was facing Rick. It said a lot about the state of my group that I was more comfortable with Jesus at my back in that moment. And I trusted my instincts.
"Rick," I said quietly, taking a step towards him, so the others wouldn't hear. "He's letting us keep our weapons."
"Look," Jesus said stepping forward, his shoulder brushing against mine. "Keep your guns," he reiterated. "We ran out of ammo months ago." He looked around at our group. "I like you people. I trust you. Trust us."
Rick nodded slowly looking at each of us in turn. Daryl was scowling but he didn't argue anymore. And when you got right down to it, Abraham was a soldier and would follow orders. I nodded back to Rick, letting him see I trusted Jesus.
