Jo
It took us a long time to carry Eugene back home. He was heavy and wasn't making it very easy on us. He moaned and roiled with pain, and unless I was mistaken it was his first gunshot wound and he wasn't taking it well. Abraham and Daryl each took an arm while I struggled to carry his legs. Eugene's entire side was soaked in blood and we had no doctor to take him home to. We went the whole way in silence. Abraham had grumbled under his breath, clearly worried about his friend, but he hadn't said anything to Daryl or I about what happened.
Rosita met us at the gate. She looked around behind us for Denise but when her eyes met mine I shook my head. Her eyes widened for a second and then narrowed and she was all business. "Let's get him to the infirmary," she said, and she set off at a brisk walk, leading the way. Without Denise, Rosita had the most medical experience.
She had us lay Eugene on the bed and immediately ripped open his shirt so she could see the damage. Daryl backed away from the bed, turning his back on us.
I started to call to him but he wasn't listening so I turned to Abraham. "We need to talk to Rick."
He nodded and jogged out of the door without hesitation. Rick needed to know we had been ambushed so he could prepare for an attack.
Rosita was already working on Eugene, but she hesitated for a second and looked at me in confusion.
"It was the Saviors," I told her. "They were waiting for us." I glanced over at Daryl but he had moved to the window and his back was to us. His shoulders were tight with tension and I couldn't tell if she was listening or not.
She shook her head in disgust and then went back to work. "I need you to grab me some water and clean rags."
I nodded, snapping into motion. I didn't have a ton of medical training. Most of my experience was in doing the damage, not repairing it, but I wasn't squeamish. Rosita wasn't a doctor, but she knew her stuff and had a lot of field experience. She was quick and efficient and had Eugene bandaged and resting comfortably in less than twenty minutes.
I stood over the sink, washing the last of Eugene's blood off my hands. The door opened and I flinched, I guess I was more raw than I had realized. Abraham looked at me apologetically when he realized he had startled me. I gave him a reassuring smile, so he would know I was okay. I picked up a towel and dried my hands.
"Rick's coming," Abraham reported stepping up to the bed.
I turned back to him and jerked my chin down in a nod.
"How is he?" Abraham asked stepping up next to Rosita who was standing over Eugene.
"The bullet just grazed him, but it's a good thing we got him back when we did. Antibiotics you picked up could save him from an infection," she called in a little bit louder voice. I met her gaze and nodded a thanks, but Daryl didn't look away from the window.
"Could save his life. It's what Denise did." Eugene coughed and Rosita turned her attention back to the bed. "You here?" she asked.
"Present," Eugene replied coughing.
"Good," Abraham said.
Eugene's eyes fell to Abraham. "I was not trying to kill you. I was looking for a moment."
"You found it," Abraham said with a brisk nod of approval.
"Do you apologize for questioning my skills?" Eugene asked.
