Jo

A noise in the hallway roused us both the next morning. I rolled to my feet, my hand dropping to my kukri. Pain exploded across my ribs, but I ignored it as I slowly rose into a crouch to face the door. I looked over at Daryl who was already on his feet, his new machete in hand. Whatever was making the noise wasn't near the door but further down the hall. We quickly gathered our supplies and Daryl shoved the desk and bookshelf away from the door so we could get out.

He glanced back at me frowning. I was moving stiffly and my muscles were tight. He scowled. I stepped towards him, my kukri in my hand. "You lead," I said motioning towards the door. He nodded and turned back to unlock the door but I could see how worried he was.

Daryl took a deep breath and pulled the door open. He didn't hesitate. With the machete in hand he prowled down the dark hallway. We moved silently through the maze of offices. I stayed twenty feet back from Daryl, keeping an eye out for any additional supplies we could use.

I followed him around a corner and stopped. There was a snarling walker pinned to the wall by an arrow. I frowned at the green and white fletching on the arrow.

"Yours?" I asked unnecessarily. There weren't that many white and green fletched crossbow bolts were floating around the city. It just surprised me. I would have thought that kid was long gone.

"Yeah," he slammed the machete down, cutting it's head in half. I reached out and pulled the arrow, tucking it into my bag.

He nodded to me and then automatic gunfire sounded just around the corner. I was a step in front of Daryl and I turned the corner ahead of him. The kid was wrestling with a walker. I jumped forward intending to help him. Daryl was right, we might be able to get information out of him. He saw me behind the walker and his eyes widened. I dropped my hand to my kukri when the kid suddenly shoved the walker towards me and he took off running.

The Walker slammed into me, pain shot through my torso and I cried out. The impact took the walker and myself to the ground. It landed on top of me, it's teeth only inches away and pinned my arms between us. I yelled as I fought to get my arms up, but it weighed more than me, and I could feel its cool, foul breath on my neck as it's teeth snapped towards my face.

"Jo!" The machete slammed down into the walkers head just above mine. Cool blood sprayed across my chest but I flopped back against the floor, too relieved to care. Daryl reached down for me.

"I'm good," I waved him off. "You go," I ordered.

He hesitated for only a second before tearing off after the kid with our weapons.

I fought to get back to my feet and ran after Daryl, just in time to see him body check the kid into a bookcase he had been trying to move in front of a door to keep a walker away. The bookcase swayed dangerously and fell, pinning the kid to the floor.

"Please, please no," the kid was whining. "I only did it to protect myself, please."

"Why you follow'in us?!" Daryl roared at him. I hadn't seen Daryl this mad in a long time. He snatched up his crossbow and swung it to face the kid.

"I-I didn't, I didn't I swear!" The kid screamed from below the shelf. "I thought you followed me."

I closed my eyes for a moment as memories of The Big Stop went over me. The snarls of the walker filled the air and I ran a hand over my hair trying to get a hold of myself.
