''Whatever you did it must have been really stupid'' Timothy rolled his eyes at his dad. Patrick looked at the young boy, confused.
''And why, pray tell would you say that?'' he ventured taking a sip of tea, Tim picked up his book from the table and made eye contact with his dad as Shelagh placed a plate of what seemed like scrambled eggs in front of Angela.
''One omelette.'' She smiled awkwardly hoping the young girl wouldn't mind. Patrick understood what his son meant because in Timothy's words her cooking 'always went a bit wonky' when Shelagh was annoyed or upset at her husband. The doctor nodded in understanding, as Tim started walking to the door. Shelagh came back into the room with a second plate of food slamming it in front of her husband blanking his thanks.
"Not staying for breakfast?" She asked Timothy, her voice slightly shaky as she brushed the small bits of egg off her skirt,
"I'd rather be spared thanks." He muttered, receiving a stern but almost amused look from his father.
"Anyway I'm meeting a friend to get food. The people at the fish and chips shop always give us free packets of the chips that they can't sell because of being slightly cold" He explained pulling his coat from the rack
"Well then, have fun I suppose." Shelagh sighed, exasperated at his enthusiasm. Patrick raised an eyebrow at his son who had his hand on the door.
"Hold on young sir, who's this friend?" He asked standing up in pursuit of his son, Tim turned around and rolled his eyes
"I didn't think I'd get out that easily. His name is Alex Boyd. He's a friend from grammar school." He told his dad, Shelagh perked up at the mention of Timothy's new friend
"Boyd? I delivered their baby girl. How are they?" She asked light heartedly, Patrick couldn't help but smile, the was she cared so much for her patients, even the ones she didn't know that well was one of the reasons he fell in love with her.
"They're brilliant. Really thankful to you both but then, what's new." Timothy nodded opening the door and waving goodbye to his parents. Shelagh smiled waving back and closing the door behind him, momentarily glancing at her husband before walking swiftly back through to Angela who was still working on her scrambled omelette.
"Alright sweetie, I have some errands to run so I have to leave you with daddy for a while. I'll be back soon" Shelagh told her little girl, kissing her forehead. Beatrix was still sleeping in her cot so Shelagh kissed the baby gently so as not to disturb her peaceful rest. Patrick and Shelagh exchanged a quick look before she picked up her coat and handbag.
