Shelagh had spent most of Sunday in bed hating the world but the next day she felt fine. Her head hurt at first but she was mostly alright. On Monday She had been called out to a delivery with Barbara. On arrival Barbara grinned at her friend and inquired how she was doing.
''How was the hangover?'' She asked taking her bag out from the back of her bike. Shelagh sighed following Barbara up the stairs.
''Terrible. Why do people carry on drinking?'' She exclaimed, Barbara laughed and shrugged opening the door for Shelagh.
''Okay Alice steady breathing now, could I please get you on your back with your legs apart?'' Shelagh said confidently, Alice looked up and glared at the midwife.
''I'm in enuff bloody pain as it is!'' She replied through deep groans. Barbara smiled reassuringly at Alice.
''I know It's difficult Alice but I promise it will speed up the birth and make it easier for me and Nurse Turner.'' She told the mother, Alice groaned and shook her head. Another contraction was coming so there was no time to argue.  Barbara put on her gloves and knelt underneath Alice who still hadn't cooperated and was standing upright leaning against the back of a chair.
''Not quiet fully dilated.'' Barbara sighed to Shelagh.
''Alright Alice it'll be a bit more of this for a while and then we'll check how far along you are later. Sound good?'' Barbara said to Alice who huffed and braced herself against the chair.
''I bet you aint had te go through this eh lassy? ye dinny look it'' Alice grunted at Barbara who pursed her lips and shook her head slowly.
''I only got married three months ago, to a reverend.'' She replied smiling brightly, Alice laughed sarcastically.
''Jus a reverend eh? Poor sod. Pretty young thing like ye and 'e can't lay 'ands'' She replied, Shelagh could tell Alice would be a hand full and Barbara wasn't very well equipped to deal with it.
''I had a baby girl three months ago. She had her head pressed against my spine meaning birth took longer than normal.'' Shelagh intervened saving Barbara one of the most awkward conversations in her life. A little later the head was born and they had convinced Alice to lie down but the bed was too low for Shelagh to comfortably assist Alice so she knelt on the floor at the end of the bed.
''Alright dear, one last contrction and we're going to meet your baby okay? Nurse Hereward will give you something to brace against.'' Shelagh told Alice who nodded, too exhausted to reply. Another contraction started.
''That's right pant, pant pant, slow down for me now! That's splendid! You have a beautiful baby boy Alice!'' Shelagh laughed as the baby slid into her hands, screaming his little lungs out. Barbara smiled and passed the towels over to Shelagh who snipped the cord and wrapped him up nice and warm.
''Oh! He aint 'alf small is ee?'' Alice gasped taking the baby from Shelagh's hands and cooing quietly. Barbara smiled at Shelagh who sighed in relief
