Chapter twenty-four

She lay on the bed in the sanatorium, cold and pale, her skin waxy and discoloured, on the  bedside table next to her sat a pair of winged glasses and a bible, a vase of sunflowers lightened the sad room. Her husband held her hand tightly, praying to any god he could think of to help in their time of need, the room was so deadly quiet, you could hear a pin drop. They had survived the tragedy once, he was convinced they could again. A friend and a nun sat sadly in chairs, both praying as well, the nun stood and placed her hand on the husband's shoulder, he wasn't a man to cry but he found himself in tears, clutching onto the last shred of life his wife had.
''Visiting time is over. She needs her rest.'' The nun said, The husband nodded softly, though he knew being there would do nothing, still he found himself tightening this grip on his wife's hand.
''I feel so useless. I'm a doctor I shouldn't have jumped to the conclusion...'' He cried, the wife's friend shook her head and stood up.
''I'm a midwife and I would've diagnosed the same. You are not to blame.'' She told him kindly, putting a hand on his shoulder, he nodded and pulled himself together.
"Sir visiting times are over, you can come back tomorrow." A nurse told him, emerging from the curtains behind, the man nodded and the nun put her hand on his, helping to loosen his grip on the wife's.
''You have to let go now...'' She whispered, replacing the woman's hand with her own and ever so gently tucking her in.
''I know I do...'' he said shakily.
