"What are you doing?"
My heart jumped but I didn't lose focus. This may seem crazy to you but I plan to cut all my classes today. It's not like it's gonna drop my grade to a B anyway.
"Shh," I said behind a wall. "I'm trying to see if Zero's gonna leave a note today."
I was hiding behind a wall where I could secretly spy on my locker. If I could just see who leaves the notes in my locker, then I can corner Zero. Right now, most of the students are in their classes so I wasn't expecting anyone to actually, well, be here.
"You know teachers are gonna see you right?" Eve reminded me.
"Do you even know me?" I asked her sarcastically. "I'll make things up. I'm a good enough actress that they'll believe me."
"And if they don't?"
"Plan B."
"What's plan b?"
"Run away."
Eve didn't answer for a few seconds. She stood there, processing my words. Finally, she hooked her arm to mine and pulled me away.
"This is why I'm your friend," she said as she struggled to pull me to our first-hour classroom.
"Noo!" I whined. "Let go, Eve!"
She tugged me harder. "We are going to first hour!"
"Never!"
I walked the opposite direction of where she was pulling me too. I wanted to stop already because I was getting tired and I feel like my arm was gonna get ripped out of my body. I imagine it to be like California floating away from the United States.
But, at the same time, I knew that if I let go, both Eve and I will fall down.
"Angel! Don't let go!" Eve said, figuring out what I was thinking. "I don't want to fall down three minutes after school started!"
"I will never let go, Jack!"
I felt her roll her eyes. "Can't we just let go at the same time?"
"We both know we're gonna fail and we'll both fly away the opposite direction."
"You don't know that."
"Have you forgotten that we are failures?"
"That. . . is true."
"I'm gonna let go!" She suddenly changed her mind. How did we end up in this situation anyway?
"Don't you dare," I growled at her.
"Omg. That's it," she simply said before she stopped pulling. I was propelled forward and landed on my chest. I felt the pang of pain immediately, but it was nothing too much.
I hit the floor with my hands in frustration. "Hey!"
"Out of everything you could have referenced, you chose Frozen?!" I looked up at her as she towered over me. I pushed myself off the floor and knelt down on my knees as I tried to pull myself back together. I blew away the strand of hair hanging over my face only for it to fall back down.
"You better be thankful I didn't sing Let it Go," I told her as she helped me stand up. "And besides, I'm sure it's not just Anna who spoke those words."
Her hands cupped my face, her expression full of sincerity and concern. "Get some help."
I laughed. I laughed so hard that I fell back down to the floor. I can't believe she said that.
