Maven dropped me home last night before he left. Phillip didn't ask much about it after I told him to go away. I didn't expect him to anyway. He's the type of guy who wouldn't be so interested in friendly dates or, like dates dates.
Which, just to be clear, wasn't what happened between me and Maven. It was just two friends talking. That was it.
Let's not bring our hopes up and think that it was something more.
But still, even after already knowing him for weeks, yesterday in the cafe was. . . It felt different. It felt like it was the first time we met each other and we were just starting to get to know what we liked and hated.
I walked slowly through the hallways with a binder delivery pressed against my chest. I smiled at the memory from yesterday.
Who wouldn't? Imagine your crush since forever, eating with you, in a cafe. Just you two, talking about what hobbies you do and what movies you watch.
As I continued to wander around the school without any idea where I was supposed to go, I walked into a wall.
Stupid.
I dropped the binder to the floor, missing my feet just a couple of inches. My hand rubbed my forehead that got the most impact. It was like a big explosion of pain.
How did I not see this wall?
Where did this wall come from? Was I daydreaming too much? Well, on the bright side, I was now back to my senses. I finally know where I was gonna go before I thought about Maven and me and the possible fut-
No! Stop right there. We can't risk walking into another wall.
With a hand still pressed against my forehead, I knelt down and grabbed the binder. Thankfully none of the papers spilled out.
I stood up and turned around to get myself back on track.
That's when I saw Lexi walking towards my direction. She stopped when she saw me. We met at the intersection. The same intersection where I saw Maven help her with her gym bag a long time ago.
"Hey, Lexi." My voice came out smaller than I wanted it to be. I didn't want to destroy our little friendship after what happened that lunch time.
I could forgive her. I probably did. I thought that maybe she just did that because she was surrounded by her other friends and she didn't want to be embarrassed that she's even friends with me. I mean, maybe she had a better excuse than that or something.
Well, I thought wrong.
"Where are you going?" I asked after she didn't say Hey back like she usually does.
"What now? What are you gonna do next?" Lexi said instead.
"What are you talking about?" What did she mean by what are you gonna do next? Like, with this binder? I was confused and she didn't make sense to me.
"Looks like you've poisoned the minds of the student body heads. So, what's your plan?" Lexi crossed her arms.
"Lexi." I sounded torn. She was never like this before. She was also the sweet and caring girl. Yes, she was strong, gee she's an athlete. Of course, she was smart. But, mean? Sounding like she was jealous? I didn't even know those words were in her vocabulary.
"Oh c'mon, Angelica. I'm sure that overly-dramatic brain of yours wouldn't just be friends with those three. What's your big plan?" Her eyes suddenly lit up. "Oh! Of course! You've always had a crush with Maven, right?"
How did she know that? I don't remember telling her. In fact, I never told anybody except for Phillip and Eve.
"Are you trying to make him like you? Use him so that you can climb your way up to popularity?" Lexi's words wounded me more than I thought it would.
