Night had fallen upon the world a few short hours ago, the vampires' day having just begun. Two vampires in particular, the king and his young seven year old son, the prince, decided that today they would have father-son bonding time. For the first ten minutes they brainstormed ideas of what they could do until the prince, Giovanni II, suggested going to the castle library and read for a short time. The king, Luciano, agreed with his son and took his small hand in his larger one. The seven year old happily walked with his father in the direction of one of his favorite places in the castle. It had been so long since he had last stepped foot in the library, so he was excited to return and find a new book to read.
Once there, Luciano opened the doors after letting Giovanni's hand go. The younger of the two Vargas boys ran in and began searching for a book immediately. His father couldn't help but to let out a chuckle as he closed the doors, sealing the two of them in the room momentarily. By the time Luciano had found Giovanni again in the slew of bookshelves, various chairs, and tables, he was seated at a table with a rather large book with his family's last name and "Volume One" scrawled on the front in fancy gold letters. Luciano sat down next to him in one of the wooden chairs and looked down at the book. He raised an eyebrow at his son as he leaned on the table, his head propped up on his hand as his elbow rested on the table ledge.
"Volume One of the Vargas Family Archives? Now why would you want to read this at your age?" he questioned with a bit of a playful tone.
"I want to know more about our family," Giovanni stated simply. "You don't talk about Nonna or Nonno very often."
"There is a reason for that."
"I know. Mama told me, but I still want to know about them."
"Va bene bambino. Do as you wish. I'm going to look for a book to read while you read this."
Luciano stood up and kissed the top of his son's head before walking off to peruse the bookshelves. Giovanni smiled before opening the book. He flipped to the back to look in the index for the specific pages on his grandparents, only to find a key pressed into the inside back cover. He took it out and looked at it curiously.
"Papa, what is this?" he asked as he held up the key in the direction his father had went.
"What is what my child?"
"This key."
Luciano was back at the table in an instant, having used his super speed to get there quicker. He stood in front of Giovanni and looked at it. His magenta hues widened slightly as he gently took the key from his son. He held the key up in front of Giovanni, looking at him from around it.
"Giovanni, do you know what this key leads to?"
"No Papa."
"Would you like to find out?"
"Sì!"
Luciano chuckled and got up, taking Giovanni's hand and helping him out of his chair. He then got up himself and led the young prince to what the key opened. The duo stopped in front of two doors, both locked by a single lock connecting multiple chains. Giovanni tilted his head, confused as to why they were there. Luciano took the key with a small, yet seemingly sad, smile as his slipped the key into the lock and turned it. The internal mechanism made a soft click as it unlocked. He was grateful that it still worked after the many years it had been locked. After unfastening the lock from the chains and the chains from the door and its handles, he pushed them open. The hinges squeaked from having not been used in so long. Luciano allowed Giovanni to enter first. The boy did so excitedly as he pretty much ran in.
