My head aches from all the screeching - this thing was certainly fast but definitely NOT new and rust-free!
After what seemed like an age of dizzying movement, my ride finally came to a halt and I could finally catch my breath and inhale a lungful of oxygen. As I slowly stood up, the old doors above me cranked themselves open and a boy of about 17 stared down at me, thoughtfully. "Alright there?" He asked me and I nodded feebly towards him; he nodded back and turned his head to face in another direction and said:"It's a girl!" As if he was announcing the birth of a newborn baby. I was certainly not a newborn baby. In fact, I didn't know who or what I was.
My mind was sluggish but not as blank as my memory. What was my name? I didn't seem to know even that simple fact. Before I could stretch out my brain anymore, the kind boy was in the (lift?) thing with me and helping me out. As soon as I was on solid greenery, I found the courage to muster a few words, "Um, this may sound stupid, but - where exactly are we?" It did sound stupid, but they all just seemed to smirk at me. The boy with slightly auburn hair put his hand on my shoulder, and said, "Don't worry. We have all been through this disorientation that you are feeling now but, if you must know, you are in the maze and your memory has been wiped." Wow. This guy sure knew how to make you feel comforted!
"Thanks.....sorry, but what exactly is your name?" I asked.
"Newt. I won't bother asking for you name as I am not sure that you will reme-" I cut him off, quite abruptly actually.
"Rose. My name is Rose." They all gawped at me and started whispering amongst themselves. I gave them a quizzical look. The name had come to me and it seemed to fit perfectly. Obviously, I wasn't meant to have remembered that yet.
"Well, seeing as you were so quick at that. Hi Rose. Let me introduce you to a few of my mates: this is Chuck," he pointed to a chubby little boy with a mop of brown, curly hair on his head and he waved at me with the cheesiest grin on his face.
A few more names later and we only had one left. This boy was different. His hair was deep chestnut with warm, brown eyes and he was towering over most of the boys. Before Newt could introduce us, I knew -and the weird thing was, so did he.
"Thomas. It's Thomas isn't it?" Once again, the crowd couldn't help but contain their awe as they gasped and chuckled.
"Rose? Rose?! Rose!" he kept repeating my name, like he knew me too. Suddenly, and without warning, Thomas ran at me, and I did the same; it was like my legs had a mind of their own. We embraced and the smell reminded me of when I was young - freshly cut flowers and a hint of sweat.
The gaggle of boys behind us just stood their with their mouths hung wide open like fish. Even Newt had lost his cool and had an unimpressed frown decorating his face. What was the matter? Was it weird for siblings to hug around here? And that's when I realized that they didn't know. "Oh. Well, we know each other."
"Well done for stating the obvious. Get on with it!" shouted a sour looking boy. But before I could say anymore, Thomas butted in.
"She's my little sister." Newt seemed to let out a huge sigh of relief and then he told everyone to leave me and Thomas to have some space.
"Thank you." I told him, out of gratitude.
"Anytime. We are friends now though, Rose. That is the price you shall pay!" We both laughed at his joke.
"Of course! How else could I repay you?!" We shared a giggle again.
After a while, twilight was fast approaching us and so we had to return to camp to get our food and drink. A girl with scrawny, black hair then appeared from the inside of a shelter and wandered towards us - I recognized her as a girl named Teresa. Thomas's breath caught as she moved ever closer; I could have sworn that he stopped breathing. I remembered that we were once the best of friends and that Thomas would usually join in with our little games.
This was different. The way Thomas looked at her made me feel elated. I was about to play the role that a little sister should!
But before any of that, shouts of distraught were let out. "What's going on?" I asked Thomas, frantically.
"The sky. It-it isn't getting any darker." I realized too, then. It had been twilight for almost 30 minutes whereas it should normally last around 10-15.
"Is that normal?" I figured that I already knew the answer to that question, but I had to ask it anyway.
"No."
"Come on Rose. We need to hold a meeting." Teresa told me. And their faces told me everything.
