We all sit down around the square table and I try and eat without feeling the need to vomit. “See, Peeta, Katniss can cook some pancakes.”
“You won’t saying the same thing later when you get food poisoning,” Peeta laughs, but I don’t find it funny, my anxiety is really getting the best of me lately and I hate it. I get up from the table and put my dish in the sink, clearly pissed at Peeta, and because if I eat anything else I am going to throw up. He walks up to me a wraps his hands around my waist, and whispers, “I am sorry, love.”
“I know you are,” I say with a semi-hearted smile.
“I was just trying to make a joke, you didn’t have to get so defensive.”
“I know.”
“The pancakes actually weren’t that bad.”
“Enough with the damn pancakes, god dammit, Peeta.”
“Someone’s feisty today,” he says walking back to the table. Annie walks up behind me and scares the shit out of me.
“I’m gonna take you to the doctors today,” she proposes.
“Oh my God, Annie,” I jump.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you, Katniss.”
“It’s fine,” I pause thinking about what she said, “I don’t think we should go to the doctor, I mean I don’t want Peeta to worry, and plus my mom works at the hospital and I don’t want anyone to know.”
“Like I said, I’ll take you and he doesn’t have to know until you want to tell him,” Annie signals towards Peeta. He is playing with Flynn and he just look so in his element.
“Are we still going to the beach today,” I hear Flynn ask Peeta.
“I don’t know,” Peeta asks louder, “Are we?”
“Absolutely we are,” Annie answers. “And we are going to the doctor, Katniss,” she says in my ear.
After cleaning the table I go upstairs and I manage to find the bathing suit Peeta packed. I should’ve known- it is dark blue bikini with a bandeau style top and the bottoms have a floral print on them. It is so skimpy and look like it came from the Capitol. I made a promise to myself that I would not own anything that reminds me of the past, and things from the Capitol definitely reminded me. I slip one of Peeta’s t-shirts over top of my bathing suit and slid on a pair of cotton lace shorts. I put my hair in my every day “Katniss braid” as the children in Panem call it. Peeta comes up behind me and kisses my neck.
“Let me guess, you packed my bathing suit for you?” I say with a smirk.
“Well- um- I –uh couldn’t really find –uh,”
“Yup,” I say laughing. Peeta picks me up and carries me downstairs. Flynn is running out the door and we are on our way to the beach.
I honestly do not feel like going to the doctors or let alone the beach, I know I promised Flynn but when you feel like fuck, you don’t want to do anything.
We reach the beach and Flynn just goes right into the water. Peeta rips his shirt off and goes in after Flynn, I just stare at his bare chest in awe.
“Katniss,” Annie wakes me out of my daze.
“Huh.”
“We should start walking to the hospital.” I just shake my head.
“Peeta, Katniss and I are going to go, um, we are going to the hospital, Katniss’ mom called and she said she wants to talk about the wedding.”
“Oh, uh alright,” Peeta says with a disappointed look in his eyes. I don’t look him in the eyes and start to walk away.
“How’d you like my excuse?” Annie says with a smirk.
“Where did you come up with it?” I ask curiously.
“I honestly don’t know. I didn’t want to completely lie to him, so I just bent the truth a little.” That really was smart of Annie, but that didn’t wipe away my nerves and anxiety about the appointment.
“Hey,” Annie shoves me with her elbow, “don’t be nervous.”
“I’m just scared, I’m not even sure if I even want kids, I know Peeta does, but I am just scared.” I say trying to hold my tears back.
“Scared of what, giving birth,” she tries to make me laugh and I just give her a smirk because I know she is trying and she’s been here for me so I owe her that.
I’m just scared that my children will get taken away from me like my sister, Gale, and-” I stop myself before I say Finnick’s name. “I just don’t know how I would be able to handle that.”
“Katniss, the Games are over and Snow’s reign is over. There is nothing to be scared of.” I nod my head and a notice we have arrived at the hospital. We walk through the doors and I see her Seam eyes. My mother is right at the front desk, I wanted to avoid seeing her because I don’t want anyone to know about this visit.
“Katniss?!” My mom says with slight confusion in her voice. She walks up and gives me a quick hug. “Why are you,” she pauses as she notices Annie as she is signing me in or whatever , “Why are you and Annie here?”
“Um, I- uh...” I can’t tell her why, can I?
“She has an appointment.” Well thanks, Annie. My mom just looks at me with a blank stare, it’s kind of uncomfortable to say the least. We just stand there for a few minutes until the one nurse calls my name .Annie follows behind me and my mom returns back to her work.
The nurse leads us to the room where she “preps” me for the doctor as she said. I didn’t catch the nurse’s name but she was getting on my nerve. She was too giddy for my liking. Annie and I wait in silence for about a minute or so until the doctor walks in.
“Hello, I am doctor Krane,” she comes up and shakes my hand and gives Annie a hug, I assume they know each other. “I was Annie’s doctor,” she says quite awkwardly. “Alright, let’s get started, shall we?” I nod my head and she starts asking questions: “Give me some symptoms.”
“I’ve felt sick every morning, I get really emotional and I get major headaches.”
“Okay, when was your last period?”
“About two weeks ago.”
“When did you start feeling, uh,” she pauses searching for a word, “pregnant?”
“A week ago when we came here, I think.”
“When was the last time you had sex,” she just bluntly asks.
“The morning before we came here,” I blush.
“Okay, they are pretty normal symptoms, so let’s take a look.”
I prop my legs up and I just lay there and anxiety over takes my thoughts, until Dr. Krane speaks up, “Well you are not pregnant.” Those words not pregnant lift a huge weight off of my chest. “But I want to run a couple of tests before you leave.”
“But you said I wasn’t pregnant, so why do you-”
“Yes, but…” she trails off, “Hold out your hand.”
“Wait, I’m confused.”
“Just hold out our hand.” I hold out my hand and Dr. Krane writes something on her note pad. “I don’t want to scare you, but I don’t think they were pregnancy symptoms.”
