The rest of the summer passed quickly, with John and Mary arriving home the next day and Dean gathering, his father, Bobby, and Ellen into a room to inform them of the relationship between him and Cas. It had all been going well until they found out that Mary had overheard. She had been awkward around them, but only for a couple of days, when she seemed to calm down, or she was just hiding her uncomfortableness well. Throughout the summer, Cas would return to his house, and check what was happening. About a week before they were due to start Yale he went over, insisting that he didn't need anyone to come. He came back late, and drunk, he revealed to Dean that his father had gone, and Dean insisted on staying up all night with him. Cas' distance from his family, however, had brought him and Dean closer, and before long Cas was becoming a member of the family. Sam looked up to him, and Charlie found him great to share her crap jokes with. Even Mary warmed to him.

It is the day before Charlie, Dean and Cas were supposed to start Yale, and the two boys were in Charlie's room helping her to pack. Dean standing on her wooden chair clearing off the top of her closet. Castiel and Charlie stand beneath, each holding a box, Charlie's labelled with 'charity' and Castiel's labelled with 'college'. Dean was showing Charlie everything he took off the closet and she told him which box to put it in.
John takes them all to Pollie's for lunch. Sam and Jess having to perch at the end of the table made for six, as Bobby had snuck in and got the window seat first, and John and Dean sat on the same side, with their backs to the door, Charlie sits exactly opposite Bobby while Mary sits opposite John, with Cas facing the door opposite Dean. They eat so much that Pollie comments on the likeliness that they'll explode. When they finish they sit back, and Sam stands up.
"I want to say something." All eyes are on him, except the one guy in the corner with his back to them. "When I found out that Dean and Cas were a thing, the first thing I did was to go to Jess' and give take the $20 she owed me." Laughter and a cough from the guy in the corner. "I'm gonna miss these dweebs, yes, especially Charlie. I'm gonna miss 'em when they go to Yale." A tear appears in the corner of Dean's eye, Sam is barely able to hold back his own tears when he speaks again. "I'm gonna come and stay every weekend, and Skype you guys every night." The tears start to fall down the faces of both brothers, Charlie and Mary. Sam now addresses Dean directly. "I'm gonna miss you." Dean looks him in the eye, stands up and wraps his arms around him, while Charlie climbs over the table and joins in the hug. When they finish hugging Dean turns to Cas and looks at him.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
They go in to kiss each other, which receives an applause. John speaks first.
"Let him up for air Dean." Even Mary laughs at that. Dean sits back down, and him and Cas talk. They hold hands and all is good, until Cas seems distracted. He looks past Dean's shoulder with his mouth open.
"Cas what's wrong?" Dean follows his gaze and notices that Cas is looking at the man in the corner, who for the first time, is looking over at them. Dean turns back.
"Cas. You know him." Cas nods, "Who is he." Dean turns back around and the man is now stood looking at Cas. Dean has a hunch as to who he is. The man speaks.
"Hello Cassy." He has a normal voice, nothing special. "How're you and your boyfriend." He puts emphasis on the word 'boyfriend' and almost spits it at Dean. John is the next to speak. "C'mon guys, let's get going, you've got to be up early tomorrow." He squeezes out of the booth and starts to leave, Sam, Jess and Charlie follow him, and Cas starts to get up. The man pushes him down. "Hey!" John and Dean both call at the same time. The man acknowledges them.
"Look. I can do whatever the hell I want to with this kid. Can't I. Bro." Dean fully clicks as to who the man is and looks desperately at Bobby, who is currently the closest to them. Lucifer, has Cas by the collar,
"Why did you go? Why the hell did you fucking leave?!" He is shouting now. "Your such an ungrateful shit. And now your gay! What the hell. I don't know why you'd leave, to shag this homo..." he can't finish his offensive rant, because Bobby punches him in the mouth, and John ushers everyone, including Cas, to the minivan parked outside. As they speed home Dean notices the tears in Castiel's eyes and wraps a comforting arm around him. Most of the journey takes place in silence. When they get back, John catches Cas on his own. Cas expects the worst, but instead John hugs him. "It's okay. You can move in here permanently if you want." Cas looks him in the eyes and thanks him.
It's Cas' turn in the big bed that night, they'd been taking it in turns, Cas lies there quietly, tears flowing down his cheeks. Dean hears him sniffing and gets up. He shuffles in the bed next to him, and snuggles up to him. Cas stops trying to hold back his tears and begins to sob. Dean sits up, and puts his arm round Cas. He pulls him towards him, Cas sobbing into Dean's hair. "Sshh. It's okay." Cas lifts his head up and looks into Dean's eyes. He goes to kiss him. Before he can Dean looks at him and asks him. "Are you sure?" Cas nods, and Dean let's him kiss him. Cas runs his hand through Dean's hair while Dean puts his hands up the back of Cas' shirt and pulls it off. Dean smiles and traces Cas' abs with the tip of his finger. He starts loosening his belt buckle and as he pulls his jeans off he looks at Cas. "I will always love you."
