4 1/2 months together 💕
Sabrina💙"It's starting to get awkward already babe," Devin said lowly to me as we made ourselves occupied by cutting two pies in the kitchen.
Everyone else was outside in our back lawn; my mom and Dad, Shane, and Devin's parents, June and Ray. My parents put together a small get together so that everyone could get to know each other. Momma made chicken, greens, salad, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw and two pies; apple and sweet potato.
"Not really." I shrugged, cutting the final slice of the apple pie. I glided my finger along the knife and stuck it right in my mouth, tasting the fresh apples my mom got from the orchard.
"I'm just sick of my mom complaining." Devin sighed and grabbed the sweet potato pie. "Your mom seem a little irritated too, something gone go wrong."
I grabbed his chin and pulled him close over my face. "Hey, ain't nothing gonna happen. My mom is fine aight? Now let's just go out and enjoy the day."
I walked out the back door, knowing that he'd follow behind and he did. We stepped in the yard, past the stereo that was playing 90's r&b music, and to our long white picnic table where everyone was seated. We sat down together.
"So June, what's it like being the owner of your own law firm?" My mom asked while putting more salad on her plate with the two big forks.
"Well it's a lot of hard work but, I didn't mind that at all and look where it got me." June giggled, while forking at her macaroni and cheese.
My dad entered the conversation. "You must be a very busy woman."
"Indeed." She simply stated, still lightly stabbing her food rather than eating it.
"Well!" My mom playfully pulled me into a quick hug and smiled. "June you should definitely think about coming to my husband and I's annual city-wide cookout at the end of the month. We invite the whole city down to kick it with us at the lake to enjoy good food and games. Thought you might be interested so that you can get a break from laws and the courtroom?"
June had finally taken a bite from her plate. Made me wonder what her problem was cause the food was bangin'.
"I'll pass, thank you. I have too much work to do. Neither me nor my husband will have time to...kick it." She gave her husband a weird look and he gave her one back.
Stuck up, I told you.
If she keeps acting like she's too good for everything, it's gone be a problem on this beautiful spring afternoon.
My mom was disappointed. "Oh, okay. Maybe some other time I guess."
"Mmm." She gave a fake smile in return.
I looked at Shane, who was sitting across from me, and he was trying so damn hard not to snicker out loud. He looked at me over the rim of his cup, and then at mom, making me wanting to laugh by his facial expressions.
Since my mom was on my left side, I could feel her getting pissed. She couldn't stand when people acted the way Devin's mom was. They both grew up middle class, but my mom can remember sometimes when grandma couldn't feed them or when their car broke down and they had to ride the bus for a month. My mom promised herself that whenever she got as rich as she is now, she wouldn't forget where she came from or act as if she's above everyone else. That's exactly how June is.
