'Hey Mum. Everything alright?'

'Dan, you may want to get down to the hospital as soon as possible.'

Suddenly worry took over Dan's face and Kyle noticed from across their dining table. They were planning on going down to the hospital again today anyway but not for at least another five hours.

'Why? Is everything alright? What's happened?'

'Dan calm down. Everything is fine.' He could practically here his mum smiling on the other end of the phone.

'Why do we need to come so urgently?'

'Your father...has woken up.'

'Oh my...Kyle!' He looked up at his boyfriend to tell him the news: 'He's awake!'

Kyle had a huge grin on his face. He was genuinely so happy. He knew how much grief this was causing Dan.

'He's still very unstable. He doesn't remember a lot of things but I thought you might want to come and see him.'

'Yes defiantly. We'll be there as soon as possible. Love you.' He hung up the phone and got up instantly. 'We need to go now Kyle.'

'Wait, babe. How about you finish your breakfast first? You've barely ate any and last time you skipped breakfast you nearly collapsed because you skipped dinner too.'

'I won't skip dinner then.'

'Babe.'

'Fine. But can we please go out after I've finished?'

'Of course. I'll order a taxi to get here in twenty.'

Dan finished his food and quickly grabbed his denim jacket. He and Kyle went outside where a taxi was waiting for them.

The ride to the hospital seemed so slow to Dan. He couldn't wait to see his dad again...Conscious.

When they got there, they saw Dan's mum standing outside the room with a nurse. She didn't seem upset but she didn't seem happy either...?

Dan approached cautiously, he put his arm round his mum as the nurse walked away.

'What's happened? Why are you outside?'

'They took your father in for tests just before you came, we have to wait outside while they get him settled again. It'll only be two minutes dear.'

'What sort of tests? Is he okay?' Dan's mum had always tried to make things sound less worse throughout his whole life. Guess it's just a mum instinct. But she also knows how pessimistic Dan is and has been throughout his whole life. Even as a young child he would always see the worst of things.

'Well...He has dementia.'

'What?' Dan didn't know what to say...

'The impact of the crash effected his brain, that's why he was in the coma. But now it's a permanent effect. He recognised me when he first woke but he couldn't even remember that I am his wife.'

'What can we do to help? There must be something!' Dam started to get a little flustered and his breathing quickened. Kyle noticed this and it wasn't hard to figure out this as the early stages of a panic attack so he stepped in and put his arm round Dan to support him.

'Dan honey, there's nothing we can do. We can only help by telling him old memories seeing if he slightly remembers them.' Mrs Smith patted her son on the back. A nurse came out of the room holding a clip board.
