Sweat peppered my forehead and some made a break for it but was unsuccessful as I wiped my head with the back of my hand. We had been walking for what seemed like hours! Trico every now and again jumped over me, running ahead of me, and giving me a tiny heart attack every time.
"Dude calm your butt down I have good stamina but you have lungs of steel." Trico just ignored me and bounded ahead.A few minutes later Trico was still in the lead and he came to a cross section in the hallway. He turned his head to the left, sniffed, and then turned to the right. In seconds he was sprinting at full speed towards me his eyes glowing. I turned and started running but Trico quickly caught up and scooped me up in his mouth.
Still in his mouth, he tossed his head back, let me go, and I landed on my back with the back of my head against his. I opened my eyes rubbing my head and stared at what we were running from. The hall was covered in running soldiers. The ones with spears in front, swords next, then shields, and finally no weapons.
I spun around on Trico's back and navigated us through the winding halls avoiding dead ends and the soldiers. Ending up in a room with a large pool in the center I made sure the coast was clear then I hopped off Trico and examined the water.
Walking over to the edge, I crouched on the side and leaned in close to the water. Behind me I heard Trico walking around sniffing things around us.
I put a finger in the water and quickly pulling it back out just in case it was clear acid. But I was just the perfect temperature, not to hot nor to cold.
I turned to face Trico who had his face right behind my head, "ok bud good news and bad news. Good news, the water looks safe and it's not freezing cold or boiling hot. Bad news your scaring me. Everyone needs their own space and bubble, right now, your in mine."
Trico narrowed his eyes a little bit and leveled his head down so the top of his head was facing me but he could still look at me. He swung his head back and to the right. Next thing I knew, Slash!! I was submerged by the water.
I surfaced coughing and spitting water. I swam over to the bank and held out a hand to Trico, begging him help me up. He obliged and lent me a forefoot to grab onto.
Once I was steady on my feet again I scratched his back and as he was distracted I went around to where his flanks led into his tailbone. I put both hands on him and pushed him as hard as I could towards the water.
I opened one eye as I continued to try and heave him into the water and he had his head spun around to face me. I raised an eyebrow and leaned my right forearm on his back panting, out of breath.
He exhaled and stood up making me fall on my face and he walked over to the bank, parallel to the water and lifted his front and back left legs up, tilted, and fell into the water. He caused a big splash, sending water over the edge and carried me over to the wall.
Once he surfaced he called and motioned for me to come over. When I got over to him he looked down and stared. He barley blinked and never looked up. I raised an eyebrow at him and looked in the same place and saw what he was looking at. There was a something at the bottom of the pool in the side of the wall giving off light.
I jumped over to Trico, landed on his head, and he took us down toward the light. Not up toward the light, down, its different, I ain't dyin today.
When we got to the bottom the light was coming from a small tunnel just big enough for us to fit through. Trico crawled through and thankfully surfaced on the other side. Taking in deep breaths and the surroundings we were in another place with deep water. This place though it was not a pool it had a large gate spread out from the island on the same wall and forever lasting torches hung on the walls.
There was a piece of land with small patches of grass here and there and moss growing near the water. Trico climbed up onto the island and shook off after I hopped off him. That gate was our ticket out of here. The island coiled around and out looked the water.
I jumped into the water and swam over and there I was treading water and examining the large rusty gate. I looked down underwater and noticed a small opening with tiny streams of light.
I took a deep breath and drove down. I turned up and surfaced and looked for the ladder while Trico was still on the island lowering his head toward the water and getting his nose so close to the water that when he sniffed at it he inhaled some. He sprung back blowing water from his nose and looking confused and bewildered.
He is such an idiot but back to the problem at hand which is the ladder was broken and up to high for me to reach.
"Trico!" I called as Trico was pawing at the water still curious. He lifted his head up and looked over at me I pointed at the ledge to where I needed to get to and Trico turned around and stood at the highest point of the island.
He couched and stared at me and every now and again wiggling to steady himself. I shrugged my shoulders and raised an eyebrow.
He flapped his wings and made his bird like sound and leapt into the water with a huge splash and the water gushed in through the bars and boosted me up so high I landed on the lever and pulled it down. That, ladies and gentlemen was Trico's magnificent cannonball.
I dove back down and latched onto Trico and crawled onto his back panting and wiping the water from my face. I felt his neck slant down slightly and I heard bubbles being made. I patted his neck and said, "Trico get your head out of there, you can't snort water, it's not normal!"
But before I knew it we were back underwater and in another tunnel that from what I could see was wayyyy longer than the last.
I would be fine if only I had Trico's lungs. In a few minutes my vision went blurry and I couldn't hang on any longer. I let go and my companion disappeared from sight then my world went black.
