She waited for the first hit but was surprised to feel nothing, she looked at him as he was staring at her with a smirk. "This will be a warning punishment, since you seem to not know any better than to mess with me" he says casually bringing a cigarette from his pocket and lighting it, his next sentence comes out with a puff of smoke directly into Avery's face making her want to cough but she doesn't "do you even know who I am?" she tilts her head slightly not actually knowing the answer to his question.
She wanted to say no, to shout for help but she was still and silent watching him flick the ashes from his cigarette he shamelessly smoked in front of her, the smell leaving Avery thinking thoughts about his lungs slowly depleting waiting to eventually collapse. But she wouldn't say anything to him for fear of getting hit or beaten, it didn't register to her mind that they were actually alone now as he just stared at her. "W-what" she murmured softly looking at her feet, she momentarily forgot that he was the bad guy.
He huffed before grabbing her arm and putting his cigarette butt out on her flesh, the smell of the cigarette and her burning flesh made Avery want to gag the pain in her arm so intense she wanted to scream but the intense look on his face made her bite her lip to conceal her scream so hard that she could also taste her own blood. When he was done he threw it away, inspected his work while smirking before walking away; not before saying "now you belong to me" to which Avery didn't know what to say or how to react only cradling her arm as the pain slowly subdued.
The bell rang to begin fifth-day classes when Avery slowly began walking towards the nurse's office, before realising she'd have to explain how she got the burn mark on her arm and she wasn't about to rat him out and get on his bad side even more. Avery rushed into class taking her seat quickly after quickly apologising for being late, with her head ducked down she tugged on her sleeve hoping it would make the mark go away, a foolish belief that it might actually work was diminished when the mark didn't disappear when she looked at it again.
She couldn't focus in that class, not even hear what the teacher was saying as she felt the burn of a death stare yet again on her back as much as Avery tried to ignore it she couldn't help but turn around in her seat. It was the same girl from earlier, Avery thought this girl looked a bit young to be in high school let alone a senior but she didn't want to assume anything bad she was probably smart.
If only Avery could remember that girls name, maybe then she'd be able to remember why she's giving off such negative vibes. "Miss Atropos, would you mind telling the class what's the answer to question seven, or would you rather tell us why you seem to be extremely fascinated with Miss Luis this afternoon" and to this the whole class starts laughing and oohing at the smart remark from the teacher as she stops giving me the death stare.
"The answer is six to the power of five which makes the square root of one thousand eight hundred and nineteen point six-two, and as for Miss Luis I saw her earlier smoking and I can still smell it all the way from here" she has a sly smile of her face as the class booms even louder at her response to which the teacher tells them to quiet down and once they comply Avery is sent straight to the office with a detention slip in hand.
She sits there in the office her foot constantly tapping the ground, as she fiddled with her fingers as nervousness flows through her veins she'd never been in trouble before. The principal calls her into his office where she shuffles in her legs feeling wobbly, "Avery as one of this school's exemplary students I don't expect this kind of behaviour from you before I call your father do you have anything to say as your defence?" his firm voice Avery jump slightly at his harsh tone, she shakes her head knowing she can explain this situation but her anxiety locks her lips.
"Very well then, you will have a two-day suspension and your perfect attendance record will be revoked as well as our list of possible scholarship applicants to our prestigious university will no longer have your name on it". To which Avery wants to protest but she stays still as a few tears slide down her cheeks, "maybe this will make you think twice before doing something so irresponsible on school grounds" Avery nods her head in response when she can hear her fathers voice from just outside, loud and demanding as his voice always.
"Where is my daughter? she has done nothing wrong, Avery deny anything and everything honey, you've done nothing wrong" she opens the door and there he is looking extremely frantic when her father sees the tears running down her face, Avery is crushed in the warm embrace of her father as he reassures her with comforting words.
Without any more words spoken she is taken to their car and driven home, the two-minute ride home was a silent one but it was a comfortable silence. He doesn't question her, to which Avery is grateful for eventually, she'll find an excuse to use to explain to her father. "Just get some rest or study if you'd like I'll come up soon with some snacks" her father gives her a gentle smile she returns this smile before heading upstairs to her room. It's times like this that Avery is grateful for her parents, especially her father even if he is busy he always has time for her.
He may just be one of the only reason she hasn't ended it yet.
