The next day at school Avery was on time for class, her towards the ground she rushed to her first class, earphones in her ears she blasted out the world with the music that she loved. Her jacket zipped all the way up, and a scarf around her neck so much warmth that she could feel the perspiration begin to form on her forehead. She just about reached her destination when a strong arm pulled her away from the door and pushed her against the wall, Avery didn't have to look up to know who it was the smell of smoke was a dead give away.
"Good morning Sweetheart" he breathed against her cheek, she could feel the bile of this mornings meal threaten to arise swallowing it back down she looks up for a second before frowning and lowering her head towards the ground again, he pulled out one of her earphones putting it in his ear. "Never pictured you as a classical girl" he flirted putting it back in her ear and twirling a piece of her loose hair around his finger. She nodded her head before sliding to her left to get into the classroom, "not so fast sweetheart" he mused before his lips quickly brushed her own and he walked away with a smirk.
Letting out a shaky breath Avery looks up to see that same girl glaring so hard she felt it in her soul, she sped into the classroom quickly taking her seat. Her head was down for most of that class as she focused on her work, Avery felt something hit her head looking around on the floor Avery sees a scrunched paper. She tried to ignore it but the burning curiosity overcame her better judgement and she picked up what seemed to be a note, "Leave him alone bitch he's mine" the cryptic note read.
Knowing immediately who the threatening note was from, Avery wanted to tell the girl that it wasn't what she thought but the fear of fumbling words kept her completely silent. The rest of that class went by silently, but Avery would constantly feel a heated gaze making her squirm in her seat. When the bell rang she rushed out of her seat to leave, unfortunately, her teacher asked her to stay behind for a quick chat, she stood awkwardly beside the teacher's desk as everyone quickly files out of the classroom.
"I heard about your yesterday, and the sad news about revoking your admission into our university" Mr Staple shakes his head solemnly, "You are one of my top students, if not the best, I will have a word with the principal today to change his decision" his words want to make Avery smile but she shakes her head. "Thank you, sir, but I've made my choice and now I must live with the consequences," she says so quietly Mr Staple almost didn't hear her. "I admire your maturity Avery and I will let you go with this but if you ever need help my classroom door is always open" he hands Avery a note excusing her for being late for class and ushers her out of the classroom with a smile.
She walks into her next class late, her head is down as she quietly apologises to the teacher handing in the note and taking her seat as people stare at her oddly. Avery can hear the not too subtle whispers of two girls behind her, "yeah they were caught making out this morning, yeah it was Avery I saw it myself" she had no idea what they were talking about until she remembered what happened just before she got into her first-day class.
That boy who gave her the burn mark on her arm had kissed her this morning, except Avery hadn't considered it a kiss until she continued to hear the girls gossiping about her. Avery knew that their information was all wrong, they didn't kiss let alone full-on make out like they were saying. Eventually, the teacher told them to be quiet and threatened detention slips, when they finally stopped gossiping, to which Avery was thankful for. That class was long and boring, Avery found her mind wandering off to thoughts she pushed into the back of her mind the night before.
When the bell finally rang, Avery felt sleepy, she dragged her feet out of the classroom. Hoping to escape to her secret place or at least Mr Staples class for break time but a hand intertwined with her own and dragged her to the place she dreaded most the cafeteria. With her head down she stared at the hand she was still holding, Avery noticed a weird tattoo of a symbol on his inner wrist.
Avery recognised it easily, as she was looking at the mark on her arm and this tattoo looked exactly the same. But she was too shy to ask when they got into the cafeteria the loud voices made Avery cringe. She had always preferred quiet places over noisy ones, she was pushed into a seat and she scowled before quickly making her face blank. Avery clutched her bag as if her life depended on it, she looked up and noticed the stares from the other people at the table. One face, in particular, made Avery want to leave but the arm around her shoulders forcing her to stay.
"Thanatos, why'd you bring your new pet to lunch" the girl that gave Avery the threatening note this morning scoffs, crossing her arms and pouting; an obvious attempt to look cute. The boy whose name was just revealed to Avery just shrugged in response stealing a chip from her and tossing it in his mouth. Everyone else at the table was silent, and Avery could feel the tension radiating between the two of them. "Because I can, Atropos" he stated in a bored tone, Avery ignored the fact that the girl had called her a pet just taking in her name.
Why did their names sound oddly familiar and why did they seem somehow connected?
